AI Search Marketing in 2026: Ads, AI Max and Getting Cited

Ads now run inside AI Overviews in India and ChatGPT ads are self-serve. Here is what to switch on, test and measure across Google, Microsoft and OpenAI.

01Google Ads can serve text and Shopping ads inside AI Overviews in English in 12 countries, including India, from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, with no opt-out and no separate reporting.
02Google AI Max for Search adds search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion to existing Search campaigns, and Google says non-retail advertisers typically see 14% more conversions at similar CPA or ROAS.
03OpenAI opened self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager to India-based advertisers on 31 August 2026, with ads shown below responses to Free and Go users and not to Plus or Pro subscribers.
04OpenAI switches on ChatGPT ads creative enhancements by default from 31 October 2026, so advertisers who need copy approval must opt out in Ads Manager first.
AI search marketing in October 2026 means buying and earning visibility inside AI answers, not just above blue links. Google serves ads inside AI Overviews in English in India, AI Max for Search widens which queries your ads match, and since 31 August 2026 Indian businesses can buy ChatGPT ads self-serve.
The 2024 version of this article aged fast. Here is what changed, which switches matter, and how to test without burning budget.
AI search marketing is the work of getting your brand shown, clicked and cited inside AI-generated answers, through two levers: paid placements in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT, and organic citations earned by content that AI systems can crawl, trust and quote.
The paid side runs on automation. Google’s own blog says advertisers using Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns with broad match, including AI Max, are eligible for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Your exact match keyword list alone no longer decides where you show.
The organic side still runs on classic SEO. Google Search Central says no special schema, AI text file or extra markup is needed to appear in AI features.
Google ads can show above or below AI Overviews in all 200+ markets where AI Overviews run, and inside the AI Overview itself in English in 12 countries including India, while ads in AI Mode remain a Google test with new formats announced at Google Marketing Live on 20 May 2026.
Google Ads Help says only text and Shopping ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can serve inside an AI Overview. Google weighs the query and the AI Overview content, so your ad must fit the answer, not just the keyword.
For AI Mode, Google’s May 2025 blog said ads may appear below and integrated into responses. The May 2026 update added Conversational Discovery ads, where Gemini writes creative for a specific search, and Highlighted Answers, which place ads in AI Mode recommendation lists. Both are labelled as testing.
Watch out: nobody can show you an “AI Overview ads” report in Google Ads today. If an agency promises AI Overview ROAS as a separate line item, ask where the number comes from.

AI Max for Search is a setting inside an existing Google Ads Search campaign that switches on search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion together, and Google’s help page says advertisers who activate it typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS, based on non-retail data.
Three traps catch Indian accounts. Google’s FAQ says search term matching does not work with Manual CPC and recommends conversion-based bidding. Google also says AI Max is ineffective when a campaign is limited by budget. And broad keywords lose exact match priority, so add exact match copies of your money keywords.
Google says to wait at least 2 weeks after enabling AI Max before adding negatives. Then filter the search terms report by the “AI Max” match type and prune with our negative keywords playbook.
Microsoft Copilot ads appear below Copilot’s answer in a streamlined layout, introduced by a short “ad voice” summary that connects the ad to the conversation, and Microsoft triggers them on the whole session rather than the last prompt, using responsive search, product, multimedia and vertical ads from Microsoft Advertising.
Yes: since 31 August 2026, businesses based in India can buy ChatGPT ads self-serve through OpenAI’s Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, and OpenAI’s help centre says ads show below ChatGPT responses for Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see no ads.
OpenAI started testing ads in the United States on 9 February 2026. By 31 August 2026 it reported a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days and availability in over 40 countries. India is on OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability list, and the billed legal entity must be based in a listed country.
OpenAI’s help page says creative enhancements switch on by default from 31 October 2026 for new and existing campaigns. They can rewrite headlines and change destination URLs without your approval. Opt out in Ads Manager under Manage settings, at account or campaign level. Our ChatGPT ads opt-out guide recommends doing it by 29 October.
Indian advertisers have two AI search ad surfaces with confirmed India availability today: Google ads in and around AI Overviews, in English, and ChatGPT ads through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager, while Microsoft publishes Copilot ad rollout by language rather than country and Google still describes ads in AI Mode as testing.
| Platform | Where ads show | How to buy | India availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Above, below and inside the AI Overview | Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns. Inside the AI Overview: text and Shopping ads only | Yes. Inside placement in English only |
| Google AI Mode | Below and integrated into responses. Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers in testing | Performance Max, Shopping, and Search with broad match or AI Max | Not confirmed in Google’s help pages |
| Microsoft Copilot | Below Copilot’s answer, with an ad voice intro. Showroom ads in pilot | Microsoft Advertising search, product, multimedia and vertical ads. Performance Max recommended | Not listed by country. English markets fully ramped by March 2025 |
| ChatGPT | Single ad unit below a response, for Free and Go users | Self-serve Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, or OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team and partners | Yes for advertisers since 31 August 2026 |
You get cited in AI answers by being the clearest, most crawlable source on a question, and Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no special schema, AI text file or extra markup required.
The mechanism to understand is query fan-out. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics, then cite a wider set of pages than classic results. One page answering the main question and its follow-ups beats ten thin pages.
Measurement is blunt. Google includes AI feature appearances in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, with no separate AI filter. Track question-style queries there, using the tricks in our Search Console features guide.

Here is how we would run AI search advertising for an Indian brand, in the order that protects budget.
These are PingTalks rules, not platform rules. Cap each new AI surface at 10 to 15% of search budget for the first 6 weeks. Respect Google’s 2-week no-touch window.
Kill or roll back if CPA runs 30% above control after 4 weeks with enough conversions to judge. For BFSI, health and pharma brands, opt out of ChatGPT creative enhancements and check every AI-written headline against compliance.
Turn on AI Max now, in one well-tracked campaign with exclusions in place. Test ChatGPT ads with a small budget while Indian self-serve is under two months old. Treat organic citations as the SEO you already know, done more precisely.
No. Google Ads Help says you cannot opt out of serving ads in AI Overviews and cannot target that placement directly. Ads inside AI Overviews are reported as Top Ads, with no separate segment.
No. Google Search Central says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no new machine-readable files or special schema are needed. Pages must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
No. AI Max keeps your Search campaign and keywords, and adds broad match plus keywordless matching on top. Google recommends adding exact match copies of important keywords, because broad keywords lose exact match prioritisation under AI Max.
OpenAI says ads may appear for logged-in Free and Go users and logged-out users, but not for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts. Users identified as under 18 and Temporary Chats see no ads.
Their ads can still appear above or below AI Overviews. Google Ads Help says ads are not shown inside AI Overviews for sensitive verticals including finance, healthcare, alcohol, gambling and politics.
Only partly. Google’s AI Max FAQ says Manual CPC limits AI Max and search term matching will not work with it. Google recommends conversion or conversion value based bidding to use the full feature set.
