Key takeawaysThe story in 20 seconds

01Google’s link best practices page says Google uses links to discover new pages and as a signal of relevance, so link building still matters in 2026.

02Google’s SEO Starter Guide calls PageRank just one of many ranking signals and says useful content matters more than any other tip in the guide.

03Google’s spam policies treat buying links, excessive link exchanges, automated links and low-quality directories as link spam; paid links are fine only with rel=”sponsored” or “nofollow”.

04Google’s December 2022 link spam update used SpamBrain to detect sites buying links and sites selling them, and to neutralise the credit those links passed.

Link building is the work of getting other websites to link to your pages, and in 2026 it still matters: Google says links help it discover pages and judge relevance, and that links from prominent sites are one factor in judging quality. The catch is that Google now neutralises manipulative links at scale, so paid and automated links mostly waste money.

This guide gives you what Google has actually said, a safe vs unsafe tactics table, 12 white-hat tactics that work for Indian businesses and new websites, outreach templates you can copy, and a plan for spammy links. It sits under our complete SEO guide, so start there if you need the basics first.

Backlinks are links on other websites that point to a page on your site. Link building is the process of earning them. Google’s link best practices page says it uses links as a signal of relevance and follows them to find new pages, so a page nobody links to is harder to discover and harder to trust.

Two jobs, then. Discovery: Google’s SEO Starter Guide says the vast majority of new pages it finds every day come through links from pages it already crawled. Signal: the anchor text and surrounding words tell Google what the linked page is about.

That is why off page SEO is mostly link building plus brand mentions. Your on-page work tells Google what a page says. Links from other sites tell Google that someone outside your company found it worth pointing to.

Backlinks matter, but they are one signal among many, not the whole game. Google’s SEO Starter Guide says PageRank, the system built on links, is just one of many ranking signals, and that useful content will likely influence your presence in search more than anything else in the guide. Treat links as a multiplier on good pages.

Google’s How Search Works page goes a step further. It says one factor used to judge quality is whether other prominent websites link to or refer to the content. Note the word “refer”: mentions count as part of the trust picture, not just clickable links.

The December 2022 announcement matters most. Google said SpamBrain, its AI spam-prevention system, can now detect both sites buying links and sites used to pass outgoing links. Credit from those links is lost. In plain terms: bought links increasingly do nothing, and a bad pattern can still earn a manual action.

A bought link is no longer a shortcut. At best Google ignores it. At worst it becomes evidence.

Safe link building earns links because a human editor chose to cite you. Black hat SEO creates links mainly to manipulate rankings, and Google’s spam policies list the patterns: buying or selling links, excessive link exchanges, automated link creation, paid advertorials that pass credit, low-quality directories, widget and footer links, and forum signature spam.

Guest posting sits in the middle. Google’s 2021 link spam update post says it has seen low-quality guest post campaigns built only for links, and that publishing or acquiring excessive guest posts without proper link tags can trigger algorithmic and manual actions. Write guest pieces for the audience. If the link only exists for SEO, skip it.

Watch out: Indian link sellers often pitch “DA 50+ guest posts” for a few thousand rupees on WhatsApp. Google’s spam policies name this exact pattern. Domain Authority is a third-party metric, not a Google one, and a high number does not make a paid link safe.

Outreach works when the email is short, specific and useful to the editor.

You get media backlinks by giving journalists something they cannot easily get elsewhere: fresh data, a quotable expert, or a fast, accurate answer on deadline. The first four tactics below do exactly that, and they are the safest links you can earn because an editor decides every one of them.

1. Digital PR with original data

Publish one number nobody else has. Survey 300 customers, analyse your own order data, or count something public. A D2C brand in Bengaluru can publish “average delivery time by pin code” from its own logistics data. Package it as a page with a clear headline finding, a chart and a methodology note, then pitch it to reporters at YourStory, Inc42 or the business desk of a city paper.

2. Journalist request platforms

Platforms such as Qwoted connect journalists with expert sources, and its site says experts can join free. Set alerts for your niche, answer within hours, and lead with the quote itself. Two lines of real insight beat a paragraph of company history.

3. Guest expertise, not guest posts

Offer a founder column, a contributed analysis or a data-led opinion piece to a publication your buyers read. The difference from spam: you pitch an idea to an editor who can say no, and you accept their link policy, nofollow included. The brand exposure is the point.

4. Podcasts and video interviews

Indian business, startup and marketing podcasts need guests every week, and most publish show notes with a link to the guest’s site. Pitch one specific story you can tell in 30 minutes. Our list of top SEO podcasts is a starting point if you work in marketing.

The easiest free backlinks come from relationships you already have: sites that mention you without linking, partners and suppliers, local listings, and curated resource pages. These cost an email, not a budget, and they suit a new website because the other side already knows or can quickly verify your business.

5. Turn unlinked mentions into links

Search Google for your brand name in quotes, minus your own domain, for example “your brand” -site:yourbrand.com. When a site names you without a link, email the author, thank them, and ask if they would add the link so readers can find you. Conversion rates on this are high because the editor already chose to write about you.

6. Partners, suppliers and clients

Your SaaS integrations, distributors, payment partners and B2B clients often run “partners”, “stockists” or “case studies” pages. Ask to be listed with a link. This is fine under Google’s policy as long as it is a genuine relationship, not a page built only for swapping links.

7. Local citations

Google’s Business Profile help says local prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. For Indian SMBs that means a complete Google Business Profile plus accurate listings on platforms buyers actually use, such as Justdial, IndiaMART for B2B, or a city chamber of commerce. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere.

8. Resource pages

Universities, associations and niche blogs keep “useful resources” pages. Search for intitle:resources plus your topic, check the page is maintained, and suggest your guide only if it is genuinely better than what is listed. One honest suggestion beats ten generic pitches.

Pro tip: Treat your outreach list as personal data under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Use work email addresses, keep only what you need, and remove anyone who asks you to stop.

A new website earns backlinks fastest by building one thing worth linking to and showing up early on topics people are about to search. Assets such as free tools and fixes for broken links give editors a reason to cite you, and Google Trends tells you when a topic is rising so you can publish first.

9. Broken link building

Find a page in your niche that links to a dead resource. Recreate or improve that resource on your site, then tell the editor their link is broken and offer yours as a replacement. You fix their page and earn a link in the same email. Free crawlers such as Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which its site says gives free access to Site Audit and Site Explorer for verified sites, help you find broken pages on sites you own; for other sites, spot-check outbound links on resource pages by hand.

10. Free tools as link assets

Calculators and checkers attract links for years. Think a GST calculator for a CA firm, an EMI calculator for a lender, or a hashtag finder for a social agency. Keep the tool fast, free and ungated. If you offer an embed, give it a plain branded credit link and do not stuff keywords into it, since Google lists keyword-rich widget links as spam.

11. Google Trends newsjacking

Open Google Trends, set the region to India, and watch rising queries in your category. Google’s Trends FAQ says the data is a sample of real searches, normalised and scaled from 0 to 100, so read it as relative interest, not volume. When a budget announcement, festival sale or regulation spikes, publish a quick, accurate explainer with your own angle and pitch it the same day. Our guide to using Google Trends for keyword research covers the filters.

12. Associations, events and alumni networks

Speaking at a meetup, sponsoring a college fest, or joining an industry body usually earns a profile or speaker page with a link. Mark any paid sponsorship link as sponsored. The relevance and the audience are worth it either way.

link building through events and partnerships in India
Events, partners and associations are the most overlooked source of real links for SMBs.

A good outreach email names the specific page, says in one line why your resource helps that page’s readers, and makes saying yes take ten seconds. Keep it under 120 words, send it from a real person, and follow up once. Never offer money for a dofollow link, because that is the behaviour Google’s spam policies describe.

Template 1: Unlinked mention

Subject: Thanks for mentioning [Brand] in [article title]

Hi [Name], thanks for including [Brand] in your piece on [topic]. Readers who want to try it might find it easier with a link to [URL]. Happy to share a fresh stat or quote if you update the article. Thanks, [Your name], [Role]

Template 2: Broken link

Subject: Broken link on your [topic] resources page

Hi [Name], I was reading your [page title] and noticed the link to [dead resource] returns an error. We published an updated version here: [URL]. It covers [one specific improvement]. Either way, you may want to fix that link. Best, [Your name]

Template 3: Original data pitch to a journalist

Subject: Data: [headline finding] across [N] Indian [cities or businesses]

Hi [Name], you covered [related story] last week. We analysed [data source] and found [one-sentence finding]. Full method and charts: [URL]. I can share the raw table or a quote from our founder today. [Your name], [phone]

Personalise the first line every time. If you cannot write one real sentence about the recipient’s work, you have not earned the right to email them. For subject lines that get opened, see our guide to headlines that get clicks.

Measure link building in Google Search Console’s Links report first, because it is free and shows the links Google itself knows about. Track new linking sites per month, which of your pages earn links, and the anchor text used. Then check whether linked pages gain impressions and clicks in the Performance report over the following weeks.

  1. Open the Links report. In Search Console, go to Links in the left menu. You will see top linked pages, top linking sites, top linking text and internal links.
  2. Export monthly. Use Export external links and choose Latest links, which Google’s help page says can return up to 100,000 rows. On-screen tables stop at 1,000 rows.
  3. Log new linking domains. Compare this month’s top linking sites against last month’s sheet. Count new referring domains, not raw links.
  4. Check anchor text. Top linking text should look natural: brand names, URLs and descriptive phrases. A wall of exact-match money keywords is a red flag.
  5. Tie links to outcomes. For each page that gained links, check impressions, average position and clicks in Performance. Our guide to Search Console features most marketers miss shows the filters.

Two caveats from Google’s help page. The report is a sample, not every link, and it can include links that have since been removed. It also does not show whether a link is nofollow, so use a free tool such as Ahrefs Webmaster Tools alongside it for that detail.

Usually no. Google’s disavow help page says most sites do not need the tool, because Google can generally judge which links to trust on its own. Use it only when you have a large volume of spammy, artificial or low-quality links and they have caused, or will likely cause, a manual action against your site.

Random spammy links from scraper sites are normal for any site that ranks. They are not a reason to panic, and misusing the disavow tool can hurt your performance, per Google. Here is the decision path.

SituationUse disavow?What to do
A few odd links from scraper or foreign sitesNoIgnore them. Google already discounts most of these.
Rankings dropped after a core updateNo, not by defaultCheck content and the Google algorithm updates tracker before blaming links
A past agency bought links for youPossiblyAsk for removal first, then disavow what remains
Manual action: “Unnatural links to your site”YesRemove, disavow the rest, then request review

If you do get a manual action, Google’s Manual Actions help says to download your links, contact site owners to remove or nofollow the bad ones, and disavow only what you could not get removed. Blindly disavowing every backlink is not a good-faith effort and can get your reconsideration request rejected. Do not disavow organic links.

How do you create and upload a disavow file?

Create a disavow file only after removal attempts fail: a plain text file, UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII, with one URL or one domain:example.com entry per line. Upload it in Search Console to a URL-prefix property you own, because Google says the tool does not support Domain properties.

The file is limited to 100,000 lines and 2MB, lines starting with # are comments, and http and https versions need separate lists. Expect a few weeks for Google to reprocess. A new upload replaces the old list.

PingTalks verdict

Stop buying links and start building reasons to be cited. For an Indian SMB or new website, the best return comes from three tactics: one original data asset per quarter, a weekly habit of answering journalist requests, and asking every partner and supplier for a listing. Measure referring domains in Search Console monthly, and leave the disavow tool alone unless Google sends you a manual action.

Links also feed AI answers, since chatbots and AI Overviews lean on pages that the web already trusts. Our guide to AI search optimization covers that side, and the keyword research guide helps you pick the pages worth promoting in the first place.

What to do now

  • Export your Search Console Links report today and save it as your baseline.
  • Search your brand in quotes, excluding your own site, and email three sites with unlinked mentions this week.
  • List every partner, supplier, client and association you belong to, and ask each for a listing.
  • Sign up as an expert on a journalist request platform and set alerts for your niche.
  • Pick one original data idea or free tool and ship it within 30 days.
  • Mark every paid, sponsored or influencer link as rel=”sponsored”.
  • Do not touch the disavow tool unless Search Console shows a manual action.

Frequently asked questions

How many backlinks do I need to rank on Google?

There is no number. Google does not publish a backlink threshold, and its SEO Starter Guide says PageRank is just one of many ranking signals. Compare yourself with the pages ranking for your target query and focus on earning relevant referring domains, not a count.

Are free backlinks from directories and bookmarking sites safe?

Mostly no. Google’s spam policies list low-quality directory and bookmark site links as link spam. A few curated, genuine business listings such as your Google Business Profile and real industry directories are fine, but bulk submission packages are not.

How long does link building take to show results?

Google does not give a timeline. Google first has to crawl the linking page and then your page, and the Search Console Links report updates over time. Track new referring domains monthly and check linked pages in the Performance report over the following weeks.

Is buying sponsored posts in India against Google rules?

Buying a sponsored post is allowed if the link is marked rel=”sponsored” or rel=”nofollow”. Google’s spam policies say buying links that pass ranking credit is link spam. Pay for audience and brand reach, and insist on the correct link tag.

Do nofollow links help SEO?

Google’s documentation says nofollow, sponsored and ugc links will generally not be followed, so they pass little or no ranking credit. They still send referral traffic, build brand awareness and can lead to mentions, which Google’s How Search Works page counts toward judging quality.

Should I disavow spammy backlinks on a new website?

Almost never. Google says most sites do not need the disavow tool and that it can usually judge which links to trust. Use it only if you have many artificial links that caused, or will likely cause, a manual action.
