LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads: A B2B Playbook for Indian Brands
LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads look cheap on CTR, but 91% of clicks never reach your site. Here is an eight-week B2B playbook, with the real cost per visit in rupees.

LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads look cheap on CTR, but 91% of clicks never reach your site. Here is an eight-week B2B playbook, with the real cost per visit in rupees.

01LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads promote a post from a person’s profile and support only the Brand awareness, Engagement and Video views objectives.
02Kiin’s 2026 study of 464 accounts found 91% of Thought Leader Ad clicks never reach a landing page.
03At ₹95.22 to the dollar, a real site visit from LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads costs roughly ₹540 to ₹1,401 across two 2026 benchmarks.
04Author choice drives results: Kiin found an 8.6x engagement gap between top-decile and bottom-decile authors.
₹1 lakh buys you about 2,000 clicks on LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads. Or about 70. Both figures come from 2026 benchmark studies, and the gap between them is the most useful thing a B2B marketer can learn about this format.
Our advice: run LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads from two or three real people in your company, give them 25 to 40% of your LinkedIn budget, and judge them on cost per landing-page visit, not click-through rate. Below is the eight-week plan we would hand an Indian B2B team, with the maths in rupees.
LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads let a company pay to promote a post from a person’s own profile, rather than from its Company Page. LinkedIn says the author can be an employee, an industry expert, a customer or a creator, and the author must approve the request. Supported objectives are Brand awareness, Engagement and Video views.
The limits matter more than the pitch. LinkedIn’s ad specs page says you can’t add a headline, intro text, a CTA button or a URL. A link only works if it was already in the original post. Posts with multiple images, polls or documents can’t be promoted.
That rules out lead gen forms and website-conversion objectives. Treat this as an attention format that feeds your other campaigns.

₹1 lakh buys roughly 2,059 clicks or roughly 71 landing-page visits on LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads, depending on which benchmark you trust. The difference is definitional: one counts every click on the post, the other counts only clicks that reach your website. For pipeline, the second number is the one that pays salaries.
We converted two 2026 data sets at ₹95.22 to the dollar, the rate quoted on 27 October 2026.
| Benchmark | Metric | In rupees | What ₹1 lakh buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fractional Demand, 6,280 ads | Average CPC $0.51 | ₹48.6 per click | About 2,059 clicks |
| Kiin, 464 accounts | Median landing-page CPC $14.71 | ₹1,401 per visit | About 71 site visits |
| Kiin, TLA single image | Landing-page CPC $13.51 | ₹1,286 per visit | About 78 site visits |
| Kiin, TLA video | Landing-page CPC $32.34 | ₹3,079 per visit | About 32 site visits |
Kiin, a London LinkedIn Ads agency, found that 91% of Thought Leader Ad clicks never reach a landing page. They are “see more” taps, profile visits and follows. Apply that to the 2,059 cheap clicks and you get about 185 site visits, or roughly ₹540 each.
One more line from Kiin’s table deserves a pause. A plain single-image Sponsored Content ad on the Traffic objective had a median landing-page CPC of $11.75, about ₹1,119. That beats every Thought Leader Ad setup in the study. If site visits are your only goal, ordinary traffic ads still win.
Pick people whose posts already earn comments from buyers, not the most senior name on the org chart. Kiin found top-decile authors drew 10.55% engagement against 1.22% for the bottom decile across 47 authors. Choosing the author decides results more than bidding or targeting.
For an Indian B2B firm, that usually means a founder who posts weekly, a solutions engineer who explains problems plainly, or a happy customer. A Bengaluru SaaS CTO explaining a messy GST reconciliation fix is the kind of post buyers stop for.
Fractional Demand also measured an 8.6% comment-to-like ratio on Thought Leader Ads, against 1.2% for other formats. Comments are where buyers ask the question your sales team wants to answer.
Choose the author before you choose the audience. The person is the targeting.
Create a campaign with the Brand awareness, Engagement or Video views objective, then browse existing content, choose LinkedIn members, find the post and request the author’s approval. You need Super Admin, Content Admin or Sponsored Content Poster access on the Company Page, plus Creative Manager or higher on the ad account.
The menu path below follows Factors.ai’s August 2026 walkthrough. LinkedIn renames buttons often, so check the labels in your account.
Watch the pacing: LinkedIn began raising the daily spend allowance from 1.5x to 2x your daily budget in October 2026, according to Influent’s update tracker. On a ₹3,000 daily budget, a single day can now spend ₹6,000. Weekly caps still apply, but check delivery in week one.
This plan assumes a monthly LinkedIn budget of ₹1.5 lakh before taxes and a team of one marketer plus one willing founder.
| Weeks | Owner | Task | Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Marketing lead | Shortlist 3 authors. Pull their last 10 posts and rank by comments from target job titles. | ₹0 |
| 2 | Founder and authors | Each author publishes 2 single-image posts on one buyer problem, link inside with UTM tags. | ₹0 |
| 3 to 5 | Marketing lead | Promote the best post per author on Engagement. Audience: job titles plus a company list of 500 to 1,000 target accounts. | ₹50,000 (about a third of the month) |
| 6 | Marketing lead | Cut the weakest author. Build a retargeting audience from people who engaged. | Hold |
| 7 to 8 | Sales and marketing | Retarget engagers with a Lead Gen Form or traffic ad offering a demo, audit or report. | Rest of budget |
Fractional Demand notes that LinkedIn needs 300 or more members before it serves a retargeting audience. A narrow Indian account list can take weeks to reach that, so start the engagement campaign early.

Put 25 to 40% of your LinkedIn budget into Thought Leader Ads and keep the rest on formats that capture leads. Fractional Demand’s accounts with 25 to 50% on the format averaged $0.84 CPC (about ₹80). Past 50%, CPC jumped to $6.25 (about ₹595), as the format ran out of fresh audience.
We stop at 40% because of fatigue. Kiin measured a 22% drop in engagement after an audience had seen the ads five full times, and found real frequency over 90 days was 9.48 against 3.45 reported at campaign level. Smaller Indian audiences hit that wall faster.
Pro tip: Report two numbers to your CEO: cost per landing-page visit and number of target accounts that engaged. Drop engagement-rate slides. They flatter the format.
The data has limits. Both big studies come from agencies that sell LinkedIn services, priced in dollars, with panels weighted to US and European SaaS. Indian CPMs and buyer behaviour may differ, and neither study breaks out India.
LinkedIn’s own pitch points the other way. On LinkedIn’s product page, Cognism’s Canberk Beker is quoted saying the format raised CTR and cut CPC, though no numbers are given. Jae Oh, senior director of product management at LinkedIn Marketing Solutions, made a related point about B2B targeting on 22 October 2026: “not everyone can buy your product.” Cheap engagement from the wrong people is still waste.
There is also people risk. Authors can revoke permission at any time, and the ad stops. If your star founder-voice leaves, the asset leaves too. Spread the budget across at least two authors.
Run it, but as the opening act. LinkedIn Thought Leader Ads are the cheapest way we know to get a real person’s ideas in front of a named list of Indian buyers. They are not a traffic engine and can’t collect leads. Fund them at 25 to 40% of LinkedIn spend, use single images over video, and measure them on landing-page cost and engaged accounts. Teams that judge them on CTR will overspend.

Yes. LinkedIn says companies can promote posts from employees, industry experts, customers or content creators. The author must approve the request before the ad runs and can revoke permission later.
No. Thought Leader Ads support only the Brand awareness, Engagement and Video views objectives, and you cannot add a CTA button or URL. Retarget people who engaged with a separate Lead Gen Form campaign instead.
Single-image and video posts work. LinkedIn says posts with multiple images, polls or documents cannot be promoted. Kiin’s 2026 benchmark found single images delivered far cheaper landing-page visits than video.
LinkedIn does not publish India rates. Converting 2026 agency benchmarks at ₹95.22 to the dollar gives about ₹49 per click on average, but roughly ₹540 to ₹1,401 per visit that actually reaches your website.
Tag the link in the original post with UTM parameters before it goes live, then track cost per landing-page visit and the number of target accounts that engaged. Engagement rate alone overstates results because most clicks are profile visits and see-more taps.
