Meesho Skips Platform Fees and Bets on Ads: What Sellers Must Do
Meesho's Q2 FY27 results confirm it will not add a platform fee and expects ad monetisation to rise from FY28. Here is what that means for seller margins, with our break-even maths.

Meesho's Q2 FY27 results confirm it will not add a platform fee and expects ad monetisation to rise from FY28. Here is what that means for seller margins, with our break-even maths.

01Meesho reported Q2 FY27 revenue from operations of ₹4,132 crore, up 34%, and cut its net loss to ₹132 crore on 28 October 2026.
02Meesho CEO Vidit Aatrey said the company does not believe in charging a platform fee, so extra revenue will come from logistics or seller ads.
03Meesho CFO Dhiresh Bansal expects ad monetisation as a share of NMV to start rising from FY28.
04A Meesho seller with a 25% margin before ads needs at least 4x ROAS on ad-driven orders to break even.
Meesho will not add a platform fee at checkout, and it is counting on seller ads to carry its next leg of revenue. That was the message from Meesho’s Q2 FY27 results on 28 October 2026, and if you sell on Meesho, it means your ad budget is quietly becoming your commission.
The numbers back the bet. Meesho’s marketplace revenue rose 34% to ₹4,120 crore, which the company tied to stronger advertising monetisation and better matching of seller demand with shopper intent. CFO Dhiresh Bansal told analysts that ad monetisation as a share of NMV should start climbing from FY28.

Meesho reported revenue from operations of ₹4,132 crore for the quarter ended September 2026, up 34%, and cut its net loss to ₹132 crore from ₹411 crore a year earlier. Net merchandise value (NMV) grew 23% to ₹12,911 crore, and contribution margin rose to 6.0% of NMV.
Orders hit 819 million, up 17%. Shoppers now buy 10.4 times a year on average. Founder and CEO Vidit Aatrey put it plainly: “More consumers are shopping on Meesho, and they are shopping more frequently.”
The festive picture beats the headline 23%. Meesho’s Mega Blockbuster Sale moved from Q2 last year into Q3 this year, so the company compared the 90 days before Dussehra instead. On that basis NMV grew 33%.
Meesho charges sellers zero commission, so its revenue comes mainly from logistics charges and seller advertising. On the earnings call, Aatrey said Meesho does not believe in a platform fee or hidden cart charges, and that any extra revenue would come from its take on logistics or ads instead.
Watch out: Meesho has not disclosed ad revenue as a share of NMV, and Bansal declined to break it out. Treat any “Meesho ad take rate” figure you see online as an estimate.
That matters because most rivals do the opposite. Commissions on Indian marketplaces typically run from 15% to 25%, per Financial Express figures cited by Lapaas Voice. Meesho swaps a fixed cut for an auction. You pay only if you want visibility, and the price is set by every other seller bidding for the same shopper.
On a zero-commission marketplace, your ads are the commission. You just get to choose how big it is.
Creators are the second lever. Meesho said creator-led content commerce NMV grew 160%, with 2.2 million pieces of content generating orders and more than 400,000 sellers taking part, according to its shareholder letter as reported by BigGo Finance. Shoppable videos are fast becoming the social commerce layer of the marketplace.
A Meesho seller should treat break-even ROAS as 1 divided by their margin before ads. At a 25% margin, any campaign returning less than ₹4 in sales for every ₹1 spent loses money. Work this number out per product, because a ₹299 kurti and a ₹1,299 saree carry very different margins.
Our maths. We modelled a seller doing ₹5 lakh a month in sales, with a 25% margin after product cost, packaging and returns but before ads. These are illustrative assumptions, not Meesho data.
| Ad spend as % of sales | Monthly ad bill | Profit left | ROAS this implies |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4% | ₹20,000 | ₹1,05,000 | 25x |
| 8% | ₹40,000 | ₹85,000 | 12.5x |
| 12% | ₹60,000 | ₹65,000 | 8.3x |
| 25% | ₹1,25,000 | ₹0 | 4x |
The table assumes every rupee of sales came from ads, which is the worst case. Most sellers have organic orders too, so check how much of your sales your ads actually drive before you raise bids. Our guide to PPC conversion tracking covers the logic. If ad-driven orders return less than 4x, you are paying Meesho to lose money on them.
Pro tip: Set your bid caps from the break-even ROAS of your lowest-margin SKU, not your average. Averages hide the products that bleed.

Amazon’s advertising revenue grew 10.9% to $19.64 billion in Q3 2026, its slowest pace in five years, mainly because Prime Day moved into Q2 in most large countries. Amazon expects ad growth back in the high teens in Q4, so this is a calendar effect, not a collapse in demand.

At the 29 October closing rate of ₹95.26 to the dollar, that is about ₹1.87 lakh crore in ad sales in one quarter. That is roughly 45 times Meesho’s entire quarterly revenue. On the call, CEO Andy Jassy also pointed to the timing of NBA games on Prime Video and a tough comparison with last year’s search marketing changes, as summarised by MarketBeat.
The India lesson runs the other way. Retail media here is still getting pricier. Datum Intelligence expects quick commerce festive ad spend to hit ₹2,200 crore in 2026, up 50%, with ad rates up an estimated 30% to 40%, per Lapaas Voice. When Meesho joins Amazon, Flipkart, Blinkit and Zepto in pushing ad monetisation, sellers face higher bids on every shelf.
Meesho may not squeeze sellers. Bansal said the Q2 margin improvement came largely from logistics, and the company’s letter warns contribution margin may not hold at 6% while it spends on growth through Diwali. Morgan Stanley’s Gaurav Rateria noted on the call that festive-adjusted growth ran ahead of 30%. A platform growing that fast can raise ad revenue through volume rather than pricier clicks. Ads also buy something commission does not: control. A seller who stops bidding pays nothing. On a commission marketplace, you pay the cut on every order, profitable or not.
Stay on Meesho if you sell value fashion, home or beauty to Tier 2 and 3 shoppers. Its 284 million buyers are hard to reach elsewhere at this cost. But budget for ads as a rising line, not a fixed one: assume your ad share of sales climbs a point or two from FY28. Sellers with ₹1,000-plus products and healthy margins can bid harder. Sellers living on 15% margins should invest in creator content and organic ranking now, before the auction gets crowded. If your products only sell when you pay for them, this news is a warning, not an opportunity.
No. Meesho runs a zero-commission model and earns mainly from logistics charges and seller advertising. On its Q2 FY27 call, CEO Vidit Aatrey also ruled out a platform fee at checkout.
Meesho CFO Dhiresh Bansal said ad monetisation as a percentage of NMV should start rising from FY28. Meesho has not disclosed its current ad revenue share of NMV.
Divide 1 by your margin before ad spend. A product with a 25% margin needs 4x ROAS to break even, and one with a 20% margin needs 5x. Calculate it per SKU, not as an account average.
Content commerce is shopping driven by creator content such as product videos. Meesho said its creator-led content commerce NMV grew 160% in Q2 FY27, with over 400,000 sellers taking part.
Amazon said Prime Day moved into Q2 in most large countries this year, after falling in Q3 in 2025. Amazon expects ad revenue growth to return to the high teens in Q4 2026.
