Key takeawaysThe story in 20 seconds

01SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of helping Google crawl, index and trust your pages so they rank for the searches your customers make.

02Google Search works in three stages, crawling, indexing and serving, and Google says it never accepts payment to crawl or rank a site.

03Google’s local ranking for Business Profiles rests on relevance, distance and prominence, and Google says there is no way to pay for a better local rank.

04Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special optimization, per Google Search Central, so standard SEO best practices remain the AI search strategy.

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making your website easy for Google to find, understand and trust, so it shows up when people search for what you sell. Done well, SEO brings you customers every day without paying for each click. Done badly, it burns months on tactics Google ignores.

This guide is the PingTalks playbook for Indian marketers and founders. You get how Google Search actually works, every type of SEO that matters, local and ecommerce basics, what AI Overviews and AI Mode change, 25 SEO tips as a checklist, a tools table and a 90-day plan. Every claim about Google traces to Google’s own documentation.

What is SEO?

SEO is the practice of improving your website’s content, structure and reputation so that search engines like Google can crawl it, understand it and show it to the right searchers. Google’s own SEO Starter Guide frames it as helping search engines understand your content and helping users decide whether to visit your site.

That second half matters. SEO is not only about ranking. It is about earning the click once you rank, and then turning that visitor into a lead, a sale or a subscriber. That is why SEO marketing sits next to content, conversion and analytics, not off in a technical corner.

For an Indian business, SEO usually means three jobs at once: ranking for what people type in English, ranking for what they say in Hindi or their own language, and ranking in the local map pack when they search “near me”. This guide covers all three.

Two promises Google makes: it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or to rank it higher, and its ranking is done programmatically. Google’s “Do you need an SEO?” page adds that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. Anyone who promises you position one is selling something else.

How does Google Search work?

Google Search works in three stages. Googlebot crawls the web to discover pages, Google indexes those pages by analysing their text, tags, images and video, and then it serves results by picking the most relevant, highest quality indexed pages for each query. Not every page passes every stage, and none is guaranteed.

Understanding these three stages is the fastest way to diagnose any SEO problem. If a page gets no traffic, the cause sits in one of these three boxes.

Stage 1: Crawling

Google discovers URLs mainly through links from pages it already knows, and through sitemaps you submit. Its crawler, Googlebot, decides which sites to crawl, how often and how many pages to fetch. It also renders pages with a recent version of Chrome, so JavaScript content can be seen, as long as nothing blocks it.

Common crawl blockers are server errors, network problems and robots.txt rules. Google’s documentation notes that HTTP 500 errors tell Googlebot to slow down, so a flaky host directly slows your discovery.

Stage 2: Indexing

After crawling, Google analyses the page: the text, the title element, alt attributes, images and videos. It groups near-duplicate pages into clusters and picks one canonical URL to show in results. It also collects signals such as language, the country the content is local to and usability.

Google is blunt here: indexing is not guaranteed. Low-quality content, a stray noindex rule or a design that hides content can all keep a page out.

Every ranking starts with three stages: crawl, index, serve.

Stage 3: Serving results

When someone searches, Google looks through its index and returns the pages it judges most relevant and highest quality. Google says relevance is decided by hundreds of factors, including the searcher’s location, language and device. A “bicycle repair shop” search in Koramangala and one in Andheri will not return the same list.

What are the main types of SEO?

The main types of SEO are on-page SEO (your content and HTML), technical SEO (crawling, indexing and speed), off-page SEO (links, mentions and reputation), local SEO (your Google Business Profile and map rankings) and ecommerce SEO (product and category pages). Most websites need all five, in different proportions depending on the business model.

What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO is everything you control on the page itself: the content, the title element, headings, the meta description, images and alt text, URLs and internal links. Its job is to make each page the clearest, most useful answer to one search intent, so Google can match it to the right queries and searchers want to click.

Write for people first

Google’s Starter Guide asks for content that is original, current, well organised into sections and free of spelling and grammar errors. It also says to anticipate different words people use for the same thing. An Indian example: people search “home loan EMI calculator”, “housing loan interest” and “griha rin” for overlapping needs.

Google adds that its language matching can connect your page to queries even without exact terms. So write naturally. Keyword stuffing is tiring for readers and breaks Google’s spam policies.

Title links and snippets

Google builds the clickable title link from your title element and other headings. Good titles are unique per page, clear, concise and accurate, and they can include your brand or city. Snippets usually come from the page content itself, and sometimes from your meta description, so write a short, unique one anyway.

Headings, images and URLs

Use headings to make the page easy to scan. Google says it does not care if headings are out of order and there is no ideal number. Use sharp images near relevant text with descriptive alt text. Keep URLs readable with useful words instead of random IDs.

Pro tip: Open Search Console, go to Performance, sort pages by impressions and look for pages with high impressions but low CTR. Those are your fastest on-page wins. A better title on a page that already ranks beats a new blog post.

What Google says to stop worrying about

  • Meta keywords: Google Search does not use the keywords meta tag.
  • Word count: length alone does not affect ranking. There is no magic number.
  • Keywords in the domain: they have hardly any ranking effect. Pick a domain for branding.
  • Duplicate content “penalty”: duplicate URLs on your own site are inefficient, but they do not cause a manual action. Copying other sites is a different problem.
  • E-E-A-T as a ranking factor: Google’s answer in the Starter Guide is a flat no. It is a quality framework, not a dial.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO makes sure Google can crawl, render and index your site efficiently, and that users get a fast, stable page on their phone. It covers robots.txt, sitemaps, canonical URLs, redirects, mobile-first indexing, structured data, HTTPS and Core Web Vitals. If technical SEO fails, great content stays invisible.

Start with mobile. Google uses the mobile version of your content, crawled with its smartphone agent, for indexing and ranking. Its mobile-first indexing guide asks you to keep the same primary content, structured data, titles and meta descriptions on mobile as on desktop. Do not hide primary content behind taps or swipes that need user action to load.

Next, duplicates. Each piece of content should be reachable through one URL. Google’s preferred fix is a redirect from the non-preferred version to the best one, and rel=”canonical” when a redirect is not possible. Indian ecommerce sites with filter URLs, UTM-tagged links and both www and non-www versions often have thousands of duplicates.

2.5 sGood Largest Contentful Paint (loading), per Google Search Central’s Core Web Vitals page
200 msGood Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness) is under this, per Google
0.1Good Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability) is under this score, per Google

Google says it highly recommends good Core Web Vitals and that they align with what its core ranking systems reward. Treat them as part of page experience, not a magic switch. A fast page with weak content still loses to a slower page that answers the query better.

On WordPress sites, speed problems usually come from heavy plugins, unoptimised images and cheap shared hosting. Our guide to improving WordPress website speed for SEO walks through the fixes in order.

The technical SEO basics checklist

  1. Check indexing. Search site:yourdomain.com on Google. If nothing shows, start with Google’s technical requirements.
  2. Inspect key URLs. Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to see how Google renders your homepage and top pages.
  3. Unblock resources. Make sure robots.txt does not block CSS or JavaScript. Google needs to see the page as users do.
  4. Consolidate duplicates. Redirect http to https and non-www to www (or the reverse), and canonicalise filter URLs.
  5. Submit a sitemap. It is optional, but it helps Google discover new pages faster on larger sites.
  6. Measure Core Web Vitals. Check the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console and fix templates, not single pages.

What is off-page SEO?

Off-page SEO is everything outside your website that shapes how Google judges it, mainly links from other sites, brand mentions, reviews and word of mouth. Google says most new pages it discovers are found through links, and PageRank, one of its fundamental algorithms, uses links. Google also says PageRank is only one of many signals.

The safe way to earn links is to deserve them: publish original data, tools and guides that people cite. Google’s Starter Guide calls word of mouth one of the most effective and lasting ways to promote a site. Indian examples that work: a salary survey from an HR SaaS, a city-wise rent index from a proptech startup, a GST calculator from an accounting firm.

Warning: Google’s spam policies list buying or selling links for ranking, excessive link exchanges, automated link building, keyword-rich widget links and widely distributed footer links as link spam. Paid placements are fine only when the link carries rel=”nofollow” or rel=”sponsored”. Those cheap “high DA guest post” offers in WhatsApp groups are exactly what this policy describes.

Google’s spam policies also name site reputation abuse (renting a strong site’s ranking for unrelated third-party content), expired domain abuse and scaled content abuse. That last one includes mass-produced AI pages made mainly to rank. If your link building plan sounds like a trick, it probably is one.

How does local SEO work for Indian businesses?

Local SEO helps your business appear in Google Maps and the local pack when nearby people search for what you offer. Google’s Business Profile help page says local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance to the search, distance from the searcher and prominence, which includes links and review count. You cannot pay for a better local ranking.

For clinics, restaurants, salons, coaching centres, showrooms and service businesses, local SEO often brings more leads than the website itself. “Dentist near me” in Jayanagar is decided in the map pack, not in blog posts.

Your Google Business Profile is often your real homepage for local searches.

How to set up your Google Business Profile

  1. Claim and verify. Google says verified businesses are more likely to show in results. Verify before anything else.
  2. Complete every field. Name exactly as on your signboard, category, address, phone, website and description. Google says complete, accurate profiles match more searches.
  3. Keep hours current. Add special hours for Diwali, Eid, Christmas and local holidays. Wrong hours lose customers and trust.
  4. Add photos and videos. Show the storefront, the team, the work and the products. Google recommends photos that tell your business’s story.
  5. Ask for and reply to reviews. Google advises responding to reviews. Reply to every one, including the angry ones, politely and fast.
  6. Build a matching local page. Create one page per real location on your website with the same name, address and phone, plus directions and local proof.

Distance is the one factor you cannot change, so do not fake addresses or virtual offices to appear in more areas. Win on relevance and prominence instead: correct categories, real reviews and mentions in local news, associations and directories.

What are the basics of ecommerce SEO?

Ecommerce SEO helps your product and category pages rank in Google Search, Images and Shopping. Google’s ecommerce guidance focuses on sharing product data through structured data or Merchant Center, clean URL structure, a clear site structure with internal links, crawl-friendly pagination and helpful product reviews. In PingTalks’ experience, category pages are where most store traffic is won.

Google describes two main ways to share product data. Add Product structured data to your pages, which can make them eligible for product rich results showing price and shipping. Or upload a product feed to Google Merchant Center, which Google says lets you tell it directly which products to show. Merchant Center participation is mandatory for some surfaces, such as the Shopping tab.

Three ecommerce SEO problems we see on Indian Shopify and WooCommerce stores again and again:

  • Filter and sort URLs: colour, size and price filters create thousands of crawlable URLs. Canonicalise them and keep only useful filter pages indexable.
  • Copied manufacturer descriptions: the same text appears on Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra and 40 resellers. Write your own, with fit, fabric, care and use cases.
  • Infinite scroll with no links: Google warns that some pagination and loading patterns hide products. Make sure every product is reachable through a normal link.

How do AI Overviews and AI Mode change SEO?

AI Overviews and AI Mode change how results look, not the rules for getting in. Google’s “AI features and your website” page says there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed. A page qualifies as a supporting link if it is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Standard SEO best practices still apply.

The mechanics are worth knowing. Google says both features may use query fan-out: running several related searches across subtopics to build an answer. That means a page can be cited for a sub-question it answers well, even if it does not rank top for the main query. Clear sections with direct answers help.

8 Sept 2025Google’s India blog announced AI Mode in Hindi, rolling out globally
7more Indian languages added to AI Mode on 8 October 2025, incl. Bengali, Kannada and Tamil (TechCrunch)
2ndIndia was the second market after the US to get Search Live (TechCrunch)

For Indian brands this is a real shift. Your customers can now ask long, conversational questions in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu or Hindi and get an AI answer with links. If your only content is English, you are invisible to that part of the answer.

Google lists practical best practices for AI features: allow crawling, use internal links, give a good page experience, keep important content in text, support it with good images and video, make structured data match visible text, and keep Merchant Center and Business Profile details current. Measure it in Search Console, where AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic sits inside the Performance report under the Web search type.

Google also says you do not need AI text files, special markup or new schema for these features. Skip the “llms.txt will save your rankings” hype. For the full playbook on getting cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, read our AI search optimization guide.

How long does SEO take to work?

SEO changes can show results within hours or take several months, according to Google’s SEO Starter Guide, and Google advises waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change worked. New sites, competitive keywords and pages that need links take longest. Fixes to pages that already rank, like better titles, usually show fastest.

SEO is compounding, not instant. Judge tactics in weeks, judge the programme in quarters.

PingTalks’ rule of thumb: technical fixes and title rewrites on ranking pages get judged after a few weeks. New content and link building get judged after a full quarter. If a vendor reports “success” in week two using only vanity metrics, ask for the Search Console clicks.

How much does SEO cost in India?

There is no credible official benchmark for SEO pricing in India, so treat any “average price” you see as an agency’s sales number. What you pay depends on the work involved: site size, competition, content volume, technical debt, link earning and how many locations or languages you target. Price the scope, not the package name.

Use this table to compare quotes on like-for-like terms.

Cost driverWhy it moves the priceWhat to ask the vendor
Site size and platformA 20-page service site and a 20,000-SKU store need very different audits and fixesWhich templates will you fix, and who implements the changes?
Keyword competitionRanking for “credit card” in India is a different sport from “CA firm in Indiranagar”Which keywords, at what search volume, and why those?
Content volumeWriters with subject knowledge cost more than spun content, and are worth itHow many pages a month, written by whom, reviewed how?
Technical debtOld migrations, duplicate URLs and slow hosting need developer timeWhat did your audit find, and what is fixed first?
Links and digital PREarning real coverage takes research and outreach timeShow examples of links you earned. Do you buy links?
Locations and languagesEach city page and each Indian language version is extra workWhich locations and languages, and how will you localise?

Two filters cut most bad quotes. First, Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, so drop anyone who does. Second, insist that the agency shares every change it makes with reasoning, another question Google itself recommends asking.

25 SEO tips: the complete checklist

These SEO tips are ordered from fastest win to longest play. Beginners can work top to bottom. If you only do the first ten, you are already ahead of most small business websites in India.

  • Verify your site in Google Search Console and check the Performance report weekly.
  • Search site:yourdomain.com to confirm your important pages are indexed.
  • Run your homepage and top pages through the URL Inspection tool.
  • Make sure robots.txt does not block pages, CSS or JavaScript you need indexed.
  • Pick one version of your domain (https, www or not) and redirect the rest to it.
  • Write a unique, specific title element for every important page.
  • Write a short, unique meta description that summarises the page.
  • Rewrite titles on pages with high impressions and low CTR first.
  • Use one clear search intent per page. Merge pages that compete for the same query.
  • Verify and complete your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers.
  • Reply to every Google review within a day or two.
  • Use readable URLs with words, not IDs.
  • Structure content with descriptive headings that match real questions.
  • Answer the main question in the first two sentences of each section.
  • Add descriptive alt text to meaningful images.
  • Link related pages to each other with descriptive anchor text, not “click here”.
  • Keep primary content identical on mobile and desktop.
  • Fix Core Web Vitals at the template level: LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 ms, CLS under 0.1.
  • Add structured data that matches what is visible on the page, starting with Product, Breadcrumb and Organization types.
  • Update or remove outdated content instead of letting it rot.
  • Write original product and category copy. Never reuse manufacturer text.
  • Publish in the Indian languages your customers actually search in.
  • Earn links with original data, tools and genuine partnerships. Mark any paid link as sponsored.
  • Track conversions in GA4, not just rankings, so SEO is judged on leads and revenue.
  • Review every change after a few weeks, keep what works and iterate on the rest.

Which SEO tools do you actually need?

Most Indian businesses can run solid SEO with Google’s free tools: Search Console for performance and indexing, Google Business Profile for local, PageSpeed Insights for Core Web Vitals and the Rich Results Test for structured data. Add a paid suite like Semrush or Ahrefs only when you need competitor research and backlink data at scale.

Search Console does far more than show rankings. Our list of Google Search Console features most marketers never use shows the reports worth opening every week.

What SEO mistakes should you avoid?

The most damaging SEO mistakes are blocking Google by accident, chasing keywords instead of intent, buying links, publishing mass AI content made only to rank and ignoring mobile. Each one is either a technical own goal or a direct breach of Google’s spam policies, and both can wipe out months of work.

  • Leaving noindex on after launch. Developers add it on staging and forget it. Check the URL Inspection tool on day one.
  • One page per keyword variation. Separate pages for “SEO company Bangalore” and “SEO agency Bengaluru” compete with each other. Merge them.
  • Buying cheap backlinks. Google names this as link spam. At best they do nothing. At worst they invite action.
  • Scaled AI content. Google’s scaled content abuse policy covers mass-generated pages with little value. Use AI to draft, but add real expertise, data and editing.
  • Hiding content on mobile. Under mobile-first indexing, what is missing on mobile is effectively missing.
  • Ignoring CTR. Ranking on page one with a dull title wastes the ranking.
  • Judging SEO by rankings alone. Rankings do not pay salaries. Leads and orders do.
  • Collecting leads without consent. If your SEO funnel ends in forms, make sure consent and privacy notices follow India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act.

Your 90-day SEO plan

A 90-day plan keeps SEO for beginners manageable. Spend the first month on foundations, the second on content and local, and the third on authority and measurement. Each phase builds on the one before, and each ends with a check in Search Console.

Marketing team planning a 90-day SEO roadmap on a whiteboard
Foundations first, content second, authority third.

Days 1 to 30: Foundations

  1. Set up measurement. Verify Search Console, connect GA4 and define conversions such as form fills, WhatsApp clicks and orders.
  2. Run a technical audit. Check indexing, robots.txt, redirects, canonicals, the mobile version and Core Web Vitals.
  3. Fix blockers first. Anything stopping crawling or indexing goes to the top of the developer queue.
  4. Claim local listings. Verify and complete your Google Business Profile for every real location.

Days 31 to 60: Content and on-page

  1. Map keywords to pages. One primary intent per page. Find gaps where you have no page at all.
  2. Rewrite your top 20 pages. Titles, meta descriptions, headings and the opening answer.
  3. Build or fix category and service pages. These earn money. Blog posts support them.
  4. Add internal links. Point from strong pages to the pages you want to rank, with descriptive anchors.

Days 61 to 90: Authority and review

  1. Publish one linkable asset. Original data, a calculator or a definitive guide your industry will cite.
  2. Do real outreach. Partners, suppliers, associations, local media and podcasts.
  3. Grow reviews. Build a simple ask into your post-purchase or post-service WhatsApp message.
  4. Review and reset. Compare clicks, CTR and conversions with day one, then plan the next quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO still worth it in 2026 with AI Overviews?

Yes. Google says pages shown as links in AI Overviews and AI Mode only need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no extra requirements. Good SEO is how you get included in those AI answers.

Can I do SEO myself as a beginner?

Yes. Google Search Console, Google Business Profile and PageSpeed Insights cover most needs for a small site. Start with indexing checks, better titles and a complete Business Profile before buying any paid tool.

What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

SEO earns unpaid rankings in Google’s organic and local results over time. Google Ads buys ad placement per click, while Google says it does not accept payment to rank a site higher in Search.

Is E-E-A-T a Google ranking factor?

No. Google’s SEO Starter Guide answers this directly and says it is not. E-E-A-T describes what helpful, trustworthy content looks like, so it guides how you write rather than acting as a single ranking signal.

Does word count affect SEO rankings?

No. Google’s SEO Starter Guide says content length alone does not affect ranking and there is no magic word count. Write as long as the topic needs and no longer.

Can any SEO agency guarantee a first-page or #1 ranking?

No. Google’s Do you need an SEO page says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Treat any guarantee as a warning sign and ask for past results and a list of every planned change.
