Google Tests AI Mode Ads Shaped by Gmail and Photos: What to Do

Google is testing AI Mode ads that use inferences from connected Gmail, Calendar and Photos for opted-in users. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and how advertisers should prepare.

Key takeawaysThe story in 20 seconds

01Google is testing ads in AI Mode for users who connect Gmail, Calendar and Google Photos through Personal Intelligence.

02Google’s updated Privacy Policy, effective 16 October 2026, allows connected-app data to personalise ads in services like Search when users opt in.

03Google says AI Mode ads are not based directly on Gmail or Photos content, and advertisers cannot access those apps.

04Google has announced no advertiser controls, targeting options or rollout date for the AI Mode ads test.

Google has started testing AI Mode ads that can be personalised using what it learns from a user’s Gmail, Calendar and Google Photos. The test only covers people who opt in to Personal Intelligence, and an updated Google Privacy Policy, effective 16 October 2026, now allows it.

For advertisers, that means a new signal is quietly shaping who sees your ads in AI Mode, and you get no new control over it. India is on the list of eligible countries, so this is not a US-only story.

What happened with Google AI Mode ads?

Google confirmed to Search Engine Land on 16 October 2026 that it is testing ads in AI Mode for users who connect apps through Personal Intelligence. Those ads can use summaries, excerpts and inferences from Gmail, Calendar and Google Photos, alongside the query, the AI response and the user’s interests.

The story picked up wider attention between 24 and 26 October, when The Hacker News, gHacks and others dug into the new privacy policy wording. Until now, Google kept AI Mode ad-free for people using Personal Intelligence. That promise has now been reversed for the test group.

The key policy line is short. Google says it will not show personalised ads from Drive, Gmail or Photos unless you choose to make that data available to services that support personalised ads. Search is now one of those services.

Is Google reading Gmail to target ads?

Not directly, according to Google. Its Search Help page says ads will not be based directly on a user’s Gmail inbox or Photos library, and advertisers get no access to either. What changes is that Search can reference summaries and inferences from those apps, and that same information may be used to choose ads.

The distinction matters. Your ad will not be matched to a specific email. But a broader inference, such as an upcoming trip, could influence which travel ad appears in an AI Mode answer. Google also says it excludes sensitive categories such as health, religion and sexual orientation.

Reported, not confirmed: Google has not published which countries, campaign types or advertisers are part of the AI Mode ads test. Treat any claim about specific formats or markets as unverified until Google documents it.

What does Google say, and what is still unknown?

Google has confirmed the principle and the guardrails, but not the mechanics advertisers care about. The table below separates what is on record in Google’s own pages from what is missing.

One more detail stands out. Connecting apps to Search does not stop at AI Mode. Google says consent lets all Search services access those apps, including Discover, Maps, Shopping, Flights and Hotels.

Why does this matter for marketers in India?

It matters because India is already in Google’s eligible country list for connecting apps to Search, and Ask Maps with Gmail works in English and Hindi there. Any AI Mode ads test that reaches India would let Google match ads on intent signals your keywords and audiences cannot see.

This continues a clear direction. AI Overviews now appear on over 80% of Google searches, per data compiled by Search Engine Roundtable, and PingTalks has already covered how AI Overviews now hit 88% of commercial keywords. Ads are following users into these AI answers, and the targeting is moving from keywords to context.

Ads in AI answers will lean on context signals, not just the keywords you bid on.

Your keyword list is becoming a suggestion. Google’s understanding of the user is becoming the targeting.

What changes for Google Ads campaigns?

Nothing in your account changes today, because Google has announced no new settings, reports or campaign options for this test. The practical shift is strategic: ads placed in AI Mode will increasingly reward campaigns that give Google rich inputs, such as broad match, strong assets and clean conversion data.

That lines up with where Google has pushed all year, from AI Max to lifecycle goals. Our Google Ads updates tracker logs that shift, and our guide to AI search marketing in 2026 covers the AI Max and AI Mode placements in detail.

There is also a measurement wrinkle. If a user’s ad was chosen partly on Gmail inferences, you will never see that reason. Expect AI Mode conversions to look less explainable in reports, which makes your own conversion tracking more important, not less.

Watch your claims: More personal ad matching raises the cost of a misleading or stale ad. Prices, offers and landing pages need to be accurate, because the user seeing them is likely closer to buying.

How do you prepare for AI Mode ads this week?

Focus on the inputs Google uses, since you cannot control the new signal itself. These five steps take under an hour across most accounts.

  1. Audit conversion tracking. Confirm enhanced conversions and offline imports are working, using our PPC conversion tracking stack as a checklist.
  2. Test broad match with AI Max on one campaign. AI Mode placements favour campaigns that let Google expand beyond exact keywords.
  3. Fill every asset slot. Add images, sitelinks, prices and promotions so AI answers have material to show.
  4. Tighten landing page answers. Put price, delivery time and key specs above the fold, since AI Mode users arrive with specific questions.
  5. Brief clients now. Explain that AI Mode traffic may convert differently and that the targeting reason will not be visible.

Pro tip: Check your own Google account too. Go to Google Account, then Data and privacy, then Personalisation settings, and review “Personalized Recommendations in Search services” so you know exactly what your customers are opting into.

PingTalks verdict

This is a small test with a big signal. Google is building ad targeting on personal context that no advertiser can see or buy directly, and it is doing so before giving you any controls. Do not panic or pause anything. Do make sure your campaigns, assets and conversion data are good enough to win when Google’s AI decides your ad fits the moment.

What to do now

  • Read Google’s Privacy Policy section on personalised ads, effective 16 October 2026, so you can answer client questions accurately.
  • Verify enhanced conversions and offline conversion imports in every active Google Ads account.
  • Run a two-week broad match plus AI Max test on one Search campaign to prepare for AI Mode inventory.
  • Complete all asset slots and update prices and promotions before the year-end peak.
  • Strengthen visibility in AI answers organically with our AI search optimisation guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can advertisers target Gmail users in AI Mode?

No. Google has not announced any targeting option or control for the AI Mode ads test. Google decides when connected-app inferences influence ad selection, and advertisers cannot access Gmail or Photos data.

Does Google show ads based on my emails?

Google says ads will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or Photos library. If you connect those apps to Search, summaries and inferences from them may be used to personalise ads, and sensitive categories such as health are excluded.

Is the AI Mode ads test live in India?

Google has not published which countries are in the AI Mode ads test. India is on the eligible list for connecting Gmail and Photos to Search, so the setting itself is available to Indian users aged 18 and above.

How do users stop connected-app data shaping ads?

Users can disconnect Gmail and Photos from Search services at google.com/search-personalization under Connected Content Apps, or turn off Personalized Recommendations in Search services in their Google Account. Connecting apps is opt-in.

Do I need to change my Google Ads campaigns?

No settings change today. The sensible move is to strengthen the inputs Google uses in AI placements: accurate conversion tracking, complete assets, and a controlled broad match or AI Max test.
