A life insurer just bought its way into the chat box. Axis Max Life Insurance is now running ChatGPT ads in India through HiveMinds, the Madison World performance unit, afaqs! reported on 28 October 2026. It is the clearest sign yet that ChatGPT ads in India have moved past launch-week curiosity and into the media plans of regulated, high-ticket categories.

Our read: term insurance is close to the perfect ChatGPT product. ULIPs are not. Here is why, what the first campaign tells you, and what ₹725 a day actually buys.

What did Axis Max Life actually launch on ChatGPT?

Axis Max Life Insurance has added ChatGPT ads to its existing search, social and performance media in India, with HiveMinds running strategy, planning, activation and optimisation. The ads are sponsored placements shown alongside ChatGPT answers. No spend, reach, click or lead figures have been disclosed, so treat every performance claim as directional.

The trade report describes the insurer as among the early insurance brands advertising on ChatGPT in India. It does not claim a first, and neither should you when you pitch this internally.

Sameer Jain, head of Commerce and D2C at Axis Max Life, said the insurer wants to be present at “an important stage of that journey”, meaning the research phase. He called the initial response encouraging. Deepti Bhadauria, CEO and partner at HiveMinds, said early results were promising and framed ChatGPT ads as one part of a full-funnel plan.

The detail worth noticing: the company says people use these chats to describe their profession, working years, family size and the cover they need. That is a need-analysis form, typed out voluntarily.

How do ChatGPT ads work in India right now?

ChatGPT ads in India went live on 27 August 2026 for logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers, appearing below a response and labelled as sponsored. Self-serve Ads Manager opened on 4 September with daily budgets starting at ₹725. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users see no ads.

OpenAI says ads are kept away from users who are, or are predicted to be, under 18, and are restricted around sensitive topics such as mental health and politics. Advertisers get aggregate data like impressions and clicks, not user-level data. WPP and Omnicom were named as the first, non-exclusive agency partners.

Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s head of global ads solutions, told TechCrunch the pitch is that businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant moments. Our full log of format and policy changes sits in the ChatGPT ads updates tracker.

Search ads catch a query. Chat catches the whole brief. Someone typing “best term plan” into Google gives you three words; someone asking ChatGPT how much cover a 34-year-old Pune engineer with two kids and a home loan needs gives you the entire underwriting context.

That matches what we saw in OpenAI’s usage data on the shift towards advice: people increasingly bring decisions, not chores, to the chatbot. Life insurance is a decision people put off, research for weeks and rarely enjoy. A sponsored answer that shows up mid-deliberation is worth more than a banner shown after it.

Search sells to a keyword. ChatGPT sells to a situation. Insurers have spent years paying aggregators to collect exactly that situation.

What does ₹725 a day buy on ChatGPT? Our maths

At the ₹725 daily minimum, a 30-day test costs ₹21,750 before taxes. Using one Indian agency’s early observed CPC of ₹13.67, that is roughly 1,590 clicks a month. Cost per lead then depends almost entirely on your landing page.

The CPC comes from a single advertiser account published by growth agency upGrowth, which says the figure is not an industry benchmark. OpenAI has published no India benchmarks. The conversion rates below are our assumptions, not reported data.

Click-to-lead rate (assumed)Leads a monthCost per lead
1%16₹1,367
2%32₹684
4%64₹342

Compare the bottom row with what you pay aggregators per term-insurance lead today. If your blended cost is above ₹700, a month of ChatGPT testing is cheap tuition. Check GST treatment of the invoice with your finance team before you commit.

Can insurers advertise ULIPs on ChatGPT?

Technically yes, but we would not start there. IRDAI’s June 2024 master circular says unit-linked products must not be advertised as investment products and requires risk warnings on linked-product ads. A short sponsored unit below a chat answer leaves little room for those disclosures, so pure term and health cover are the safer first tests.

Compliance check: the same circular asks insurers to route ads through a board-approved advertisement committee or a senior officer. Your ChatGPT headline, description and landing page all need that sign-off before launch, not after.

Who should wait?

The case against is real. Axis Max Life has shared no numbers, and “encouraging” is the word every brand uses in launch week. With only aggregate impressions and clicks reported back, you will measure on your own site and CRM, so weak GA4 or lead tracking makes the test unreadable. Fix that first using our GA4 setup guide.

OpenAI also restricts ads around sensitive topics, and the list can widen. A finance or health brand could find chunks of its best conversations suddenly ineligible. And if your monthly paid budget is under ₹50,000, the ₹21,750 minimum is too large a slice to bet on a channel without benchmarks.

PingTalks verdict

Test now if you sell term, health or motor insurance, or any high-consideration service where buyers explain their situation before purchase. Run one month at the minimum, with a dedicated landing page and lead-level tracking. Skip it for ULIPs and market-linked products until you have a disclosure-ready format, and skip it entirely if you cannot track leads past the click.

What to do now

  • Pull your last 90 days of term or health leads and note your real cost per lead by channel.
  • Ask ChatGPT 20 questions your buyers ask, in English and Hinglish, and note which ones would suit a sponsored answer.
  • Build one landing page that answers the profession, age, family and cover questions buyers bring to the chat.
  • Get compliance sign-off on headline, description and page, then run 30 days at ₹725 a day.
  • Make sure your organic answers are citable too, using our AI search optimisation guide, and review the creative enhancements opt-out before launch.
