How ChatGPT ads work, who can buy them in India, and a dated log of every OpenAI change, including creative enhancements switching on this week.

01ChatGPT ads appear below ChatGPT answers only for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users see no ads.
02OpenAI opened self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager to advertisers in India on 31 August 2026, with a minimum daily budget of INR 725 for INR-billed campaigns.
03ChatGPT ads offer Views (CPM), Clicks (CPC) and Conversions objectives, with OpenAI suggesting a USD 3 to 5 starting max CPC.
04OpenAI’s creative enhancements for ChatGPT ads switch on by default for existing campaigns; the help page says Thursday 31 October 2026, but that date is a Saturday, so advertisers should act before Thursday 29 October.
ChatGPT ads are sponsored listings that OpenAI shows below ChatGPT answers to Free and Go users, and since 31 August 2026 Indian businesses can buy them directly through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager. This page explains how ChatGPT ads work today and logs every verified change since OpenAI announced ads on 16 January 2026.
Last updated 24 October 2026. The next change that matters is creative enhancements, which switch on by default this week.
ChatGPT ads are paid placements that appear beneath a ChatGPT response when a sponsored product or service fits the conversation. OpenAI labels them clearly, keeps them separate from the answer, and says ads never change what ChatGPT says. They show only to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans.
Each ad carries the advertiser name, favicon, headline, description, image and landing page, according to OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT basics page. OpenAI is also testing a multi-image visual format during image generation.
Some placements are off limits. OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT help page says ads do not appear near personal health, mental health or political conversations, never appear in Temporary Chats, and are excluded for accounts identified or predicted as under 18. Political advertising is not allowed at all.
Yes. ChatGPT ads are available in India, and any business whose advertising and billing legal entity is based in a supported country can use self-serve Ads Manager. India appears on OpenAI’s list of 89 available countries. Larger brands can also buy through OpenAI’s Ads Solutions team, agencies or technology partners.
The Ads Manager availability page is strict about the entity. The company that advertises and gets billed must sit in the listed country. An Indian Pvt Ltd or LLP should pay with an Indian card in its own name, as OpenAI may reject foreign cards.
New self-serve accounts may be limited to their home country at first. OpenAI’s campaign setup page says reaching other countries needs identity verification and enough spend in home-country campaigns. Indian D2C brands targeting the UAE or UK should plan for that gap.
Who will see your ad: only Free and Go users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users never see ads, and Free users can pick an ads-free option with lower limits. Your audience skews to cost-conscious users, which suits many Indian consumer categories.
To advertise on ChatGPT, sign up at ads.openai.com, verify your business, add billing, then create a campaign, an ad group with context hints, and at least one ad. Ads run only after they pass policy review and your account, billing, budget and schedule all allow delivery.
Budgets behave differently from Google Ads. OpenAI’s daily budgets page says a daily budget is an average across a Sunday to Saturday week, with spend capped at 2x on any day and 7x over the week. A daily budget of INR 1,000 can spend INR 2,000 on a busy Tuesday.

ChatGPT ads offer one main format today, a sponsored card below the answer, plus three objectives: Views billed on CPM, Clicks billed on CPC, and Conversions billed per click or per thousand impressions. Targeting covers countries, regions, cities and postal codes where available, five platforms, custom audiences and product feeds.
| Objective | You pay for | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Every 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Launches and awareness in a category people research in ChatGPT |
| Clicks | Each valid click (CPC) | First tests. OpenAI suggests a USD 3 to 5 starting max CPC |
| Conversions | Per click (oCPC) or per 1,000 impressions (oCPM), never per conversion | Accounts with the Pixel or Conversions API sending clean events |
Platforms cover Android and iOS apps, mobile web and desktop. Custom audiences need at least 25,000 matched users to include, though exclusions can be smaller. Maximize results is the default bid strategy for eligible new ad groups, and ads compete in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction.
ChatGPT ads measurement runs on the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API, or both together with matching event IDs for deduplication. The Pixel stores a click reference called oppref in a first-party cookie and hashes form data with SHA-256 in the browser. A GA4 connection is in beta for early-access accounts.
OpenAI’s conversion measurement page warns that totals may include modelled conversions and will not match third-party analytics exactly. Impressions and clicks refresh about every 15 minutes, while spend can lag 7 to 8 hours, so a zero spend figure at noon means little.
If your stack runs on GA4, the GA4 connection gives OpenAI read-only access to one property, imports the previous 30 completed days and maps events such as generate_lead. Our GA4 guide covers the event naming you need first. For Indian brands, collecting hashed customer data also means checking consent wording against the DPDP Act.
Creative enhancements let OpenAI rewrite your headlines and descriptions to match a conversation, translate ad text, resize images and swap your destination URL for a more relevant page, without your review. OpenAI’s help page says they turn on automatically for new and existing campaigns, and existing account or campaign opt-outs are kept.
OpenAI’s help page says the change starts “Thursday, October 31, 2026”. But 31 October 2026 is a Saturday, and the Thursday that week is 29 October. Until OpenAI corrects it, treat Thursday 29 October as the switch-on date and set your opt-outs before then.
Translation is the risk most Indian advertisers will miss. A Hindi or Tamil rewrite of a regulated claim, such as an EMI offer or a health benefit, will not get a human check. Campaign settings override the account default, so you can keep enhancements on for broad product ads and off for anything with legal copy. Our creative enhancements opt-out guide has the click path.
In September, adapting your copy to the chat was opt-in. In October, it became the default. That is the pattern to watch on every ad platform.
Each row traces to an OpenAI page, or to attributed trade coverage where OpenAI has no readable page. Newest first.

Read a ChatGPT ads update by asking three questions: which country does it apply to, is it opt-in or default-on, and does it touch your copy, your data or your money. Most features start in the US and reach India later.
The same habit works across platforms. Our Google Ads updates tracker and Meta Ads updates tracker log the parallel changes, such as Meta switching on product browsing in ads.
When a ChatGPT ads update hits, confirm it applies to your country and account, decide whether to accept or opt out before any default date, annotate the change in your reporting, and compare two clean weeks either side.
For the organic side, getting cited inside ChatGPT answers is still free and often cheaper than the ad beside it. Our AI search optimization guide covers that, and our AI search marketing guide shows how paid and organic AI search fit together.
ChatGPT ads are worth a controlled test for Indian brands in categories people research before buying: electronics, travel, education, SaaS and D2C. Start with a Clicks campaign at a modest daily budget, measurement installed on day one, and creative enhancements off for any copy with legal claims. Scale only after two clean weeks of conversion data.
Yes. OpenAI says advertisers in India can buy ChatGPT ads directly through self-serve Ads Manager from 31 August 2026, and India is listed on the Ads Manager availability page. The advertising and billing legal entity must be based in India.
OpenAI’s campaign setup page lists a minimum daily budget of INR 725 for INR-billed campaigns. For CPC campaigns OpenAI suggests a starting maximum bid of USD 3 to 5 per click. Actual costs depend on the auction and your category.
OpenAI says no. Ads are labelled, kept separate from the answer and do not change what ChatGPT says. Advertisers also do not see users’ chats, only aggregated performance data such as views and clicks.
Only logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are ad-free, and accounts identified or predicted as under 18 are excluded. Ads also do not appear in Temporary Chats or near health, mental health or political conversations.
Open Ads Manager and select Manage settings, then switch creative enhancements off at account or campaign level. Campaign settings override the account default. Do it before Thursday 29 October 2026, since the help page date of 31 October falls on a Saturday.
ChatGPT ads use the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API for conversion tracking. A GA4 connection is in beta and imports aggregate data from one property for attribution comparisons. UTM tags on landing page URLs also pass through to standard analytics tools.
