GA4 Guide 2026: Set Up Google Analytics 4 and Track Key Events

The complete GA4 playbook for Indian marketers: setup, events, key events, consent mode, UTMs, AI referrals, retention and BigQuery.

Key takeawaysThe story in 20 seconds

01GA4 (Google Analytics 4) records every interaction as an event and replaced Universal Analytics, which stopped processing standard property data on 1 July 2023.

02A standard GA4 property allows 30 key events, and Google renamed conversions to key events so Analytics and Google Ads count important actions the same way.

03GA4 data retention defaults to 2 months, and switching it to 14 months on day one keeps explorations useful for year-on-year analysis.

04Since 13 May 2026, GA4 has a built-in AI Assistant channel for visits from ChatGPT, Gemini and other assistants, and a custom channel group adds control and retroactive reporting.

GA4, or Google Analytics 4, is Google’s analytics platform for websites and apps. It records every visit, click, form fill and purchase as an event, and it replaced Universal Analytics, which stopped processing data for standard properties on 1 July 2023. This guide shows you how to set GA4 up properly, track the key events that matter and read the reports without guesswork.

Most half-built setups look the same: the tag is live, nothing is marked as a key event, retention sits at 2 months, Google Ads is unlinked and WhatsApp clicks are invisible. Fix those five gaps and GA4 stops being a visitor counter and starts telling you which channel earns your money.

What is GA4 and how does its event model work?

GA4 is Google’s event-based analytics platform for websites and apps. Instead of treating the session as the core unit, GA4 records each action, such as a page view, scroll, outbound click or purchase, as a separate event with parameters attached, then builds sessions, users, channels and key events on top of that stream.

Every event has a name and a set of parameters. A page_view carries page_location and page_referrer. A file_download carries the file name and extension. Google’s help centre groups events into four types:

  • Automatically collected events that the Google tag sends on its own, such as session_start and first_visit.
  • Enhanced measurement events such as scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video, downloads and forms, switched on with a toggle.
  • Recommended events with names and parameters Google has already defined, such as generate_lead and purchase.
  • Custom events you name yourself for anything Google has not defined.

Engagement replaces the old obsession with bounces. Google Analytics Help defines an engaged session as one that lasts longer than 10 seconds, has a key event, or has 2 or more page or screen views. Engagement rate is the share of engaged sessions, and GA4 bounce rate is simply the share of sessions that were not engaged.

30events you can mark as key events in a standard GA4 property (50 in Analytics 360), per Google Analytics Help
25parameters allowed per event, per Google’s event collection limits page
14 monthslongest event data retention a standard property allows; the default is 2 months, per Google Analytics Help
1 millionevents per day cap on the daily BigQuery export for standard properties, per Google Analytics Help

GA4 vs Universal Analytics: what actually changed?

Universal Analytics was built around sessions and stopped processing data for standard properties on 1 July 2023, with Analytics 360 properties getting an extension to 1 July 2024. GA4 is event-based, can combine website and app data in one property, and uses data streams, engagement metrics and key events where Universal Analytics used views, bounce rate and goals.

How do you set up GA4 step by step?

To set up GA4, create a Google Analytics account and property, add a web data stream for your site, copy the Measurement ID that starts with G-, install the Google tag through your CMS, a plugin, the manual snippet or Google Tag Manager, and then confirm hits in the Realtime report.

Step 1: Create the account and property

Go to analytics.google.com and click Start measuring if it is your first time. Otherwise open Admin, click Create and choose Account or Property. You need the Editor role to create a property.

Enter a property name, then pick the reporting time zone and currency. For an Indian business, choose India time and Indian rupee, so daily numbers line up with your bank and your Google Ads account. Then select your industry, business size and how you plan to use Analytics, click Create and accept the terms.

Step 2: Add a web data stream

In Admin, under Data collection and modification, click Data streams, then Add stream and Web. Enter your primary URL and a stream name, keep enhanced measurement on, and click Create stream.

Open the stream and copy the Measurement ID under Stream details. It starts with G-. One website should have one web stream. Separate streams for www and non-www versions of the same site split your data for no benefit.

Step 3: Install the Google tag

You have four routes. Pick one and only one, because two installs on the same page double-count everything.

MethodBest forHow it worksWatch out for
Built-in CMS fieldShopify, Wix, WooCommerce, Squarespace, HubSpotPaste the G- ID into the platform’s Google Analytics fieldLess control over custom events

Google Tag ManagerSites that need custom events, consent mode and ad pixelsAdd a Google Tag with your Tag ID and an Initialization triggerNeeds a clean container and a publish step

WordPress. Site Kit by Google is the official plugin, with over 5 million active installs listed on WordPress.org. It connects Analytics, Search Console, Tag Manager and Ads, and its settings live under Site Kit > Settings. If you run Tag Manager already, put GA4 in Tag Manager and do not let the plugin place a second tag.

Google Tag Manager. In your container, go to Tags, click New, choose Google Tag as the tag type (or Google Analytics > Google Analytics in the newer flow), enter your Tag ID and set the trigger to Initialization – All Initialization Events. Click Preview to test in Tag Assistant, then Submit and Publish.

Step 4: Verify that data arrives

Google says data can take up to 30 minutes to appear. Open the Realtime report, visit your site from your phone on mobile data, and look for yourself. Since 29 April 2026, GA4 also shows a Task Assistant in the left menu with tailored setup recommendations, such as connecting accounts and fixing data issues.

What does GA4 enhanced measurement track?

Enhanced measurement makes GA4 track page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, YouTube video engagement, file downloads and form interactions without any code changes. You turn it on per web data stream, and the events start flowing as soon as each option is enabled, which makes it the cheapest tracking win available.

OptionEvent nameFires when
Page viewspage_viewEach page load or browser history change; cannot be turned off
ScrollsscrollFirst time a user reaches 90% depth on a page
Outbound clicksclickA click on a link to another domain
Site searchview_search_resultsA results page loads with a search query parameter in the URL
Video engagementvideo_start, video_progress, video_completeEmbedded YouTube videos with JS API support start, pass 10, 25, 50 and 75%, and end
File downloadsfile_downloadA click on a link to a common document, media or archive file
Form interactionsform_start, form_submitFirst interaction with a form in a session, and form submission

The path is Admin > Data collection and modification > Data streams, then click your stream and use the Enhanced measurement slider. Click the gear icon to configure each option. Your site search uses a parameter other than q or s? Add it there.

Two cautions. The form events fire on many forms that are not real leads, such as newsletter boxes and search bars, so do not mark form_submit as a key event blindly. And form parameters only show in reports after you register them as custom dimensions.

Recommended events are event names and parameters Google has already defined for common actions such as generate_lead, sign_up and purchase. GA4 does not send them automatically, so you add them with code or Tag Manager. Custom events are names you create for anything else, such as a WhatsApp chat click or a brochure request.

Always check the recommended list first. Google’s help page says sending recommended events with their prescribed parameters gives you the most detail in reports. The lists that matter most for Indian businesses:

  • Lead generation: generate_lead, qualify_lead, disqualify_lead, working_lead, close_convert_lead, close_unconvert_lead.
  • Online sales: view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info, purchase, refund, plus list and promotion events.
  • All properties: login, sign_up, search, share, select_content.

Custom events fill the gaps. A D2C brand in Bengaluru that sells mostly through WhatsApp should track a whatsapp_click event whenever someone taps a wa.me link. In Tag Manager, that is a Just Links click trigger where Click URL contains wa.me, feeding a Google Analytics event tag.

Respect the limits on Google’s event collection page: event names up to 40 characters, 25 parameters per event, and parameter values up to 100 characters for most fields. Use lowercase with underscores, and never send names, phone numbers or email addresses as parameters. Google requires you to keep personally identifiable information out of GA4.

How do you mark key events in GA4?

To mark a key event in GA4, go to Admin, then Events under Data display, find the event in the Recent events tab and click the star icon next to it. For an event that does not exist yet, click Create event, name it and switch on Mark as key event. Key events were called conversions until Google renamed them.

Google renamed them to fix a real problem. Analytics and Google Ads used to count conversions differently, so the two platforms disagreed. Now an event becomes a key event in Analytics, and a key event can become a conversion in Google Ads for measurement and bidding. Google’s chain is simple: event, then key event, then conversion.

A standard property allows 30 key events and Analytics 360 allows 50. Some events, such as purchase, are key events by default. When you create one, you also choose a default value and a counting method. Pick once per session for leads, since a user who submits the same form twice is still one lead.

Watch this: Google’s linking guide says that when you link Google Ads with personalized advertising on, events including add_to_cart, begin_checkout, session_start and view_item are also marked as key events. Review your key events list right after linking and unstar anything that is not a business outcome, or your key event rate becomes meaningless.

Consent mode v2 passes each visitor’s cookie choice to Google tags through four parameters: ad_storage, analytics_storage, ad_user_data and ad_personalization. Google’s consent guidance is written for tag users who receive data from users in the European Economic Area. Sites with only Indian traffic sit outside that guidance, but India’s DPDP Act makes consent design relevant anyway.

Here is what each parameter controls, according to Google’s consent setup page:

  • ad_storage: storage such as cookies used for advertising.
  • analytics_storage: storage used for analytics, such as visit duration.
  • ad_user_data: whether user data can be sent to Google for advertising, needed for enhanced conversions.
  • ad_personalization: whether data can be used for remarketing and personalized ads.

There are two implementations. In basic consent mode, Google tags stay blocked until the visitor agrees, so declined visitors send nothing. In advanced consent mode, tags load before the banner and send cookieless pings when consent is denied, which lets GA4 run behavioural and conversion modelling to fill the gaps. If you have European visitors or run ads to them, use advanced mode through a certified consent management platform such as Cookiebot, OneTrust or Usercentrics, or through Tag Manager.

For India, the Ministry of Electronics and IT notified the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules on 14 November 2025, with an 18-month phased compliance window. The rules require a separate, clear consent notice that explains the purpose of collection, and users can withdraw consent at any time. Penalties under the DPDP Act go up to ₹250 crore for failing to keep reasonable security safeguards. Get a privacy lawyer to confirm what applies to your site, and build your consent banner so it can drive consent mode either way.

Link Google Ads from Admin, Product links, Google Ads links, and Search Console from Admin, Product links, Search Console links. You need the Editor role in GA4 plus admin access in Google Ads or verified ownership in Search Console. Ads data shows in Analytics within 48 hours, and Search Console data arrives with a 48-hour lag.

Google Ads link

  1. Go to Admin > Product links > Google Ads links and click Link.
  2. Click Choose Google Ads accounts, select your account or manager account, and click Confirm, then Next.
  3. Leave personalized advertising on if you want GA4 audiences for remarketing. Expand Enable Auto-Tagging to switch auto-tagging on.
  4. Click Next, review and Submit.

Then create Google Ads conversions from your GA4 key events if you want Ads to bid on them. Using GA4 audiences in Google Ads also needs Google signals or user-provided data collection active on the property. A property supports up to 400 links. For the bidding side, read our breakdown of GA4 and Google Ads integration for paid search and how to choose the right conversion tracking method for PPC.

Search Console link

  1. Go to Admin > Product links > Search Console links and click Link.
  2. Under the option for properties you manage, click Choose accounts, pick the Search Console property and click Confirm, then Next.
  3. Select your web data stream, click Next, then submit.
  4. Open Reports > Library and publish the Search Console collection, which is unpublished by default.

You get two reports: Google Organic Search Queries and Google Organic Search Traffic. One web stream links to one Search Console property, and links cannot be edited, only deleted and recreated. Pair this with the Search Console features most marketers never use.

Which GA4 reports actually matter?

For most marketers, five GA4 reports answer the everyday questions: Realtime for checking tracking, Traffic acquisition for channel performance, Landing page for which pages start profitable sessions, Events for what users do, and Pages and screens for content performance. Everything else is either a variation of these or a job for Explorations.

ReportQuestion it answersWhere to find it
RealtimeIs my tag and my new event firing right now?Reports > Realtime
Traffic acquisitionWhich channels bring sessions, engagement and key events?Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition
User acquisitionWhich channel first brought each new user?Reports > Acquisition > User acquisition
Landing pageWhich entry pages convert and which leak?Reports, Engagement section or the Generate leads collection
EventsHow often is each event and key event triggered?Reports, Engagement section
Pages and screensWhich content gets views and engagement time?Reports, Engagement section

Properties created on or after 27 March 2023, or set up with business information, can use the Business objectives collection. It groups reports under goals like Generate leads and Drive online sales. Find it in Reports > Library and click Publish to add it to your menu.

Read Traffic acquisition with Session primary channel group as the dimension, then add Session source / medium as a secondary dimension. Sort by key events, not sessions. A channel with half the traffic and twice the leads deserves the budget. Our conversion rate optimization guide shows what to do once the Landing page report exposes a weak page.

When should you use GA4 Explorations?

Use GA4 Explorations when a standard report cannot answer your question, such as where users drop out of a checkout, which paths lead to a lead form, or how a segment of WhatsApp visitors behaves differently. Click Explore in the left menu and choose a technique. Retention limits how far back they look.

Google lists seven techniques:

  • Free-form: a custom table or chart with any dimensions and metrics.
  • Funnel: step-by-step drop-off, such as product view to cart to purchase.
  • Path: what users do after or before a given page or event.
  • Segment overlap: how audiences like mobile users and paid visitors intersect.
  • User exploration: the event stream of individual anonymous users.
  • Cohort: how groups of users return over time.
  • User lifetime: long-run value by acquisition source.

Each user can save up to 200 explorations per property, with up to 10 segments per exploration.

How should you tag campaigns with UTM parameters?

Add utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to every link you control outside Google Ads, such as Instagram bios, WhatsApp broadcasts, emails, influencer links and QR codes. GA4 reads these parameters to assign source, medium, campaign and channel. Google says missing parameters show up as (not set), and values are case sensitive, so use lowercase every time.

A WhatsApp broadcast link for a festive sale would look like this: https://example.in/diwali-sale?utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=broadcast&utm_campaign=diwali_sale_2026&utm_id=dw26

Google also strongly recommends utm_id and utm_source_platform, and supports utm_term and utm_content for keywords and creative variants. Build links with Google’s free Campaign URL Builder at ga-dev-tools.web.app. For Google Ads, let auto-tagging do the job once the accounts are linked.

Pro tip: Keep a shared UTM sheet with allowed values for source and medium. Ten people typing Instagram, instagram and IG will give you three sources and a broken report. Check our Meta Ads guide and email marketing guide for channel-specific tagging.

How do you track ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in GA4?

Since 13 May 2026, GA4 puts recognised AI assistant visits into a built-in AI Assistant channel, setting the medium to ai-assistant. For full control and older data, create a custom channel group with an AI channel defined by a source regex such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai, placed above Referral. Custom channel groups apply to reports retroactively.

Google’s channel definitions page says the AI Assistant channel covers assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode stay in Organic Search. On 11 June 2026, Google added a Source Group dimension that groups spelling variants of common sources, with built-in grouping for AI sources like ChatGPT and Perplexity, and Source Group is filled in retroactively.

Why build a custom group at all? Google’s announcement does not say the new default channel applies to older data, and you may want your own list of assistants. Here is the setup:

  1. Open channel groups. Go to Admin > Data display > Channel groups and click Create new channel group. This starts from a copy of the default group.
  2. Add the AI channel. Click Add new channel, name it AI referrals, click + Add condition group, choose Source, select matches regex and enter chatgpt\.com|openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai. Click Save channel.
  3. Reorder. Click Reorder, drag the AI channel above Referral, click Apply, then Save group. GA4 assigns traffic to the first channel that matches.
  4. Report on it. In Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, switch the primary dimension to your new channel group and compare engagement rate and key events against Organic Search.

A standard property gets 2 custom channel groups and up to 50 channels per group, so do not waste them. One caveat: custom channel groups are not in the BigQuery export schema. Getting cited by these assistants in the first place is a separate job, covered in our AI search optimization guide.

AI assistant visits now get their own GA4 channel.

What data retention setting should you choose in GA4?

Set GA4 event data retention to 14 months, the maximum for a standard property, on the day you create it. The default is 2 months, and retention limits explorations and funnel reports, so a 2-month setting means you cannot compare this Diwali season with the last one in an exploration. Standard aggregated reports are not affected.

The path is Admin > Data collection and modification > Data retention. Choose 14 months under Event data retention, decide whether to keep Reset user data on new activity on, and click Save. You need the Editor role.

Know three quirks. Increasing retention applies to data not yet deleted, so the change is not retroactive for anything already gone. Age, gender and interest data are always kept for 2 months. Analytics 360 properties can choose 26, 38 or 50 months for event data, and anyone who needs longer history on a standard property should use BigQuery.

What does GA4 BigQuery export give you?

BigQuery export sends your raw, event-level GA4 data into a Google Cloud BigQuery project, where you can query it with SQL, keep it as long as you pay for storage and join it with CRM or sales data. Standard properties can export up to 1 million events a day in the daily export, while streaming export has no event limit.

  1. In Google Cloud Console, create or choose a project and enable the BigQuery API.
  2. In GA4, go to Admin > Product links > BigQuery links and click Link.
  3. Choose the project, pick a data location, select data streams and any events to exclude.
  4. Choose Daily, Streaming or both, then review and submit.

You need Editor access in GA4 and Owner access on the BigQuery project. The daily file usually lands in the early afternoon of your reporting time zone, and data should start within 24 hours of linking. You can start in the free BigQuery sandbox, which has a 10 GB storage quota. Turn the export on early even if nobody queries it yet. BigQuery only holds what has been exported, so the sooner you link, the more raw history you own.

What are the most common GA4 setup mistakes?

The most common GA4 mistakes are double tagging, skipping key events, leaving retention at 2 months, inconsistent UTM values, never linking Google Ads or Search Console, and marking every form submission as a lead. Each one is quick to fix, but each one silently corrupts months of data while the reports still look normal.

  • Two tags on one page. A plugin plus a hard-coded snippet, or a plugin plus Tag Manager. Page views double and engagement looks oddly perfect.
  • No key events. Without them, acquisition reports cannot tell you which channel produces leads or sales.
  • Too many key events. Starring scroll or session_start inflates your numbers and confuses bidding.
  • Default 2-month retention. Your explorations go blind beyond the last two months.
  • UTMs on internal links. Tagging your own banners overwrites the real source of the session.
  • Personal data in events. Phone numbers or emails in URLs or parameters break Google’s rules.
  • Spam hits from unknown domains. Since 21 September 2026, GA4 supports Include filters for hostnames, so you can allow only your own domains.
  • Unregistered parameters. Custom parameters stay invisible in reports until you create custom dimensions for them.

Our guide to low PPC conversion rates covers the tracking faults that make good campaigns look bad.

PingTalks verdict

GA4 is only as good as the five decisions you make in week one: one clean tag, 14-month retention, three to five real key events, linked Google Ads and Search Console, and strict UTMs. Get those right and GA4 answers the only question a founder cares about: which rupee of spend brought which lead or sale. Skip them and you will have a pretty dashboard that cannot defend a budget.

Go deeper

GA4 sits at the centre of your measurement stack. These PingTalks guides pick up where this one stops:

What to do now

  • Open Admin and confirm your GA4 property uses India time and INR.
  • Change data retention to 14 months today.
  • Check your site source for duplicate Google tags and keep exactly one.
  • Mark 3 to 5 real business actions as key events and unstar the rest.
  • Link Google Ads and Search Console, then publish the Search Console collection.
  • Create the AI referrals channel group and place it above Referral.
  • Write a lowercase UTM sheet and share it with everyone who posts links.
  • Link BigQuery to the free sandbox so raw data starts piling up.

Frequently asked questions

How long does GA4 take to show data after setup?

Google says new GA4 data can take up to 30 minutes to appear, and the Realtime report is the place to check. Google Ads data shows up within 48 hours of linking, and Search Console data arrives 48 hours after Search Console collects it.

Do I need Google Tag Manager to use GA4?

No. You can install GA4 through your CMS field, a WordPress plugin such as Site Kit by Google, or the manual gtag.js snippet. Tag Manager becomes worth it when you need custom events, consent mode and several ad pixels managed in one place.

How many key events can I create in GA4?

A standard GA4 property lets you mark up to 30 events as key events, and an Analytics 360 property allows 50. Keep the list to real business outcomes such as leads, purchases and sign-ups so your reports and bidding stay meaningful.

Does GA4 track ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic automatically?

Since 13 May 2026, GA4 places recognised AI assistant visits, such as those from ChatGPT and Gemini, in a default AI Assistant channel with the medium ai-assistant. A custom channel group with a source regex gives you your own list of assistants and applies to older data in reports.

Why do my GA4 campaign reports show (not set)?

Google Analytics shows (not set) when campaign parameters are missing from a link. Always add utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, keep values lowercase, and let auto-tagging handle Google Ads traffic.
