Pause, remove or cancel the whole account? The exact Google Ads click paths, what happens to your money, and the leaks that keep spending after you stop.

01Pausing a Google Ads campaign stops ads and new charges but keeps all settings, so it can be re-enabled any time.
02Removing a Google Ads campaign is permanent: reports stay visible, but the campaign cannot be restored, only copied or rebuilt.
03Cancelling a Google Ads account stops all ads within 24 hours, and accrued costs are still billed within 31 days.
04Google Ads accounts billed in India cannot request refunds while active, so advertisers must cancel the account to recover unused prepaid funds, excluding promotional credits.
To cancel a Google Ads campaign, open Campaigns in the Campaigns menu, click the status dot next to the campaign and choose Pause (reversible) or Remove (permanent). Ads stop and new charges stop, but you still pay for clicks already served.
That answers how to cancel a Google Ads campaign in 10 seconds. The expensive part is choosing the wrong one of three actions, or leaving a Performance Max campaign, a shared budget or an auto-apply setting quietly spending. This guide covers all three, with the exact click paths from Google’s own help pages as of October 2026.
Pausing a Google Ads campaign stops ads and new charges while keeping every setting, so you can switch it back on any time. Removing a campaign stops it permanently and it cannot be restored. Cancelling the Google Ads account stops every campaign within 24 hours and is the only route to a refund for Indian advertisers.
Google’s help page on campaign status is blunt about removal: a removed campaign cannot be resumed. Its data stays visible in reports, but you cannot edit its settings. To run it again you build a new campaign or copy the old one.
| Action | What stops | Can you undo it? | Billing and data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pause campaign | That campaign’s ads | Yes, enable it any time | No new charges. Settings and history kept. |
| Remove campaign | That campaign, permanently | No. Copy it or rebuild it. | No new charges. Reports kept, settings locked. |
| Cancel account | All campaigns, within 24 hours | Yes, an Admin can reactivate | Accrued costs still due. Unused funds refunded, minus promo credits. |
Our rule of thumb: pause by default, remove only what you will never run again, and cancel the account only when you want your money back or are leaving Google Ads for good.
Google’s current click path for a single campaign is short. Use the bulk route when you have more than two or three campaigns.
One catch from Google’s help page: re-enabling a campaign does not restart ad groups or keywords you paused inside it. Each paused element must be switched on separately. To find removed campaigns later, use the filter icon, then Attributes, Status and tick Removed.
Smart campaigns use a simpler dashboard. Click the campaign name, open the status menu under it and choose Pause campaign. You then pick Forever, or until I resume or Temporarily, which lets you set pause and resume dates on a calendar.

In the Google Ads mobile app, open Campaigns from the bottom menu, tap the campaign, tap the switch and confirm with Pause. Paused campaigns show a grey background. Google’s app help page covers pausing and enabling only, so do removals and account cancellation on desktop.
Ad groups work the same way. Tap More on the bottom menu, choose Ad groups, find the ad group, tap the switch and confirm. This is the fastest kill switch when a campaign misbehaves on a Sunday and your laptop is at the office.
Only a user with Admin access can cancel. If that person has left your company, Google asks you to contact support with the Customer ID, login email and billing details.
Agencies can cancel client accounts from a manager account: Accounts, then Management, tick the accounts, Edit, then Cancel. You need admin access to the manager account, and the manager account must own the client account.
Cancelling Google Ads does not wipe what you owe. Accrued costs are still billed, and Google says it charges any balance to your primary payment method within 31 days. Unused prepaid funds are refunded to the original payment method, minus promotional credits, typically within 4 to 12 weeks including bank processing.
What you see under Billing then Summary depends on your payment setting. Automatic payments show unpaid costs under Balance. Manual (prepaid) payments have no unpaid balance, and leftover funds are refunded. Monthly invoicing shows unpaid costs under Amount due.
Google lists India among the countries that cannot request a refund from an active account. The others are Argentina, Brazil, China, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan and Ukraine. If you prepaid lakhs for a Diwali push and want the leftover back, pausing campaigns will not return it. You must cancel the account.
Watch out: promotional credits are never refunded, and Google notes that reactivating before the refund confirmation email arrives cancels the refund request. If the original card is closed, you may need to temporarily reactivate, add a new payment method, then cancel again.
For money transfer payments, Google may ask you to add bank details under Billing settings, or show a Complete your refund option that leads to its bank refund form. Card refunds are usually processed by Google in about 2 weeks, plus up to 10 business days at your bank.
Yes. A Google Ads Admin can reactivate a cancelled account for free from Admin, then Preferences, then Account status, then Reactivate my account. Campaigns you left enabled start running again immediately, while paused ones stay off. You keep login access to reports, but remarketing audiences are emptied about a month after cancellation.
That last part hurts. Google sets account-owned remarketing lists, including Customer Match, to Closed on cancellation. Roughly a month later their membership duration drops to one day, which removes everyone. Lists shared with other accounts stop working for them too, and dynamic remarketing parameters are deleted.
Two more timers from Google’s help pages. An account with no spend for more than 15 months is cancelled automatically. A reactivated account that serves no ads for 3 months is cancelled again.
Pause before you reactivate. Anything left enabled starts spending the moment the account goes live.
To pause all Google Ads campaigns safely, select every campaign on the Campaigns page with the top checkbox, choose Edit, then Pause. For a planned break, schedule it instead: set a campaign end date, or create two one-time automated rules that pause campaigns on day one and enable them on your return date.
Click the gear icon beside a campaign, expand Start and end dates and pick an End date. Google says the campaign ends at 11:59 p.m. in your account’s time zone. For many campaigns, open the Settings tab, select them, click Edit and choose Change end date.
On the Campaigns page, click the three-dot icon and choose Create an automated rule. Pick Pause campaigns, select the campaigns, set Frequency to Once with your start date and time, and save. Repeat with Enable campaigns for the return date. Google says rules usually run within 2 hours of the set time, so schedule a pause the evening before, not at the last minute.
Prefer rules over end dates for a temporary freeze. An end date stops the campaign, but bringing it back is manual. A paired rule switches it back on by itself.

Most budget leaks we see after a “we stopped everything” message come from these five. Several also show up in our list of common PPC management mistakes.
Before you remove anything, export the keyword and search term data you paid to collect. Your negative keyword lists alone can save weeks of wasted spend when you relaunch. If you track conversions through GA4 linked to Google Ads, note which conversion actions you import so the relaunch measures the same thing.
Pausing is the right answer for most people who search for how to cancel. It stops charges, keeps your learning and audiences, and takes one click to reverse. Cancel the whole Google Ads account only for two reasons: you are leaving the platform, or you are an Indian advertiser who wants unused prepaid money back. Remove campaigns only when they are clutter, and only after exporting the data.

Pausing stops the campaign’s ads and prevents new charges from that point. You still pay for clicks and impressions served before the pause, and those appear on your next bill or are deducted from your prepaid balance.
No. Google says a removed campaign cannot be resumed or restored. Its performance data stays in reports, but to run it again you must create a new campaign or copy the removed one.
Google’s help pages put the full refund timeline at 4 to 12 weeks, including bank processing. Card refunds are usually processed by Google in about 2 weeks, plus up to 10 business days at the bank. Track the status under Billing, then Summary.
No. Google lists India among the countries not eligible for active-account refunds. Indian advertisers must cancel the Google Ads account to get unused funds back, and promotional credits are never refunded.
Yes. Google automatically cancels an account with no spend for more than 15 months. A reactivated account that serves no ads for 3 months is cancelled again.
Only users with Admin access can cancel or reactivate a Google Ads account. If the Admin has left your company, Google asks you to contact support with the Customer ID, login email and billing information.
