A dated log of every major Google Ads change since January 2025, with what each one means and the exact step to take in your account.

01Google Ads moved AI Max for Search out of beta in April 2026, adding AI Brief and text disclaimers that work with final URL expansion.
02Google Ads Help lists India among 12 English markets where ads can appear inside AI Overviews, while ads in AI Mode are still a test with no India date.
03Performance Max gained campaign-level negative keyword lists, 50 search themes per asset group and a Channel performance report during 2025.
04Google Ads stopped new call-only ads in February 2026, and existing call-only ads stop serving in February 2027.
This page logs the major Google Ads updates from January 2025 to today, with the date, what changed and what you should do. Last updated 24 October 2026. Every row is sourced from an official Google page: the Ads & Commerce blog, Google Ads Help, Google Marketing Live and the policy change log.
The short version: AI Max for Search is now the default Search upgrade, Performance Max finally shows you where money goes, and policy is tightening on verification and appeals. Indian advertisers also got ads in AI Overviews and a hard gambling rule.
The biggest Google Ads changes in 2026 are AI Max for Search leaving beta, new budget controls such as channel prioritization and total budgets, ad formats being tested inside AI Mode, a stricter appeals window, and Limited Ad Serving extending to every Google Ads advertiser. Each changes how you set up or defend an account.
Read the table newest first. Where Google gave only a month, we show the month. Where a feature is US-only or testing, the row says so, because most Indian accounts will not see it yet.

Two Google Ads changes land together. Existing call-only ads stop serving, and the old spend split for Search campaigns with the Display Network on is removed. Rebuild call campaigns and set channel priority before then.
Yes for AI Overviews, not yet for AI Mode: Google Ads Help lists India among 12 English-language markets where text and Shopping ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can show inside AI Overviews today, on mobile and desktop. Ads in AI Mode remain a test, and Google names no Indian rollout.
The other markets listed are Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and the US. Sensitive verticals such as gambling, finance, healthcare and politics are excluded. There is no separate campaign type to buy. If your Search or PMax campaigns are eligible, you are already in.
Pro tip: You cannot target AI Overviews directly, so judge them through search terms. Long, question-style queries in your search terms report are the closest signal you have. For the organic side, see our guide to AI search optimization.
In 2025, Google Ads launched AI Max for Search in global beta, gave Performance Max channel reporting, campaign-level negative keyword lists and full search terms reporting, expanded ads in AI Overviews to desktop and more English-language markets, and announced the phase-out of call-only ads. Measurement moved toward first-party data through Data Manager and Google tag gateway.

Read every Google Ads update for three things: the status (beta, rolling out or fully available), the markets named, and the exact date, because a beta in the US English market is a signal of direction, not a feature you can use in India this quarter. Fully available and global means check your account today.
Different sources also carry different weight. Policy pages give enforcement dates you must hit. Blog posts and Google Marketing Live pages often promise features with no date. Help Center articles quietly record the change that actually shipped, as with the 26 January 2026 change to auto-applied recommendations.
| Source | What it tells you | How binding it is | Your move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ads policy change log | Rule changes with effective dates | Enforced on the date given | Calendar it and audit affected campaigns |
| Google Ads Help announcements | Launches and action-required notices | Often has deadlines | Act on anything marked Action Required |
| Ads & Commerce blog | Feature launches and monthly Demand Gen drops | Availability is often vague | Note it, test when it shows in your account |
| Google Marketing Live | The year’s roadmap | Many items are betas or tests | Plan, do not budget yet |
The simplest way to keep up with Google Ads announcements is to follow four official pages: the Google Ads Help announcements page, the Ads & Commerce blog, the Ads policy change log and the Accelerate with Google hub for Google Marketing Live. Check them weekly, and bookmark this tracker for the dated summary.
We run the same process for search and social. See the Google algorithm updates tracker for organic changes and the Meta Ads updates tracker for Facebook and Instagram.
A Google Ads update only matters when it shows up in your account. Until then it is a roadmap, not a task.
This month, check five things in your Google Ads account: your Auto Apply settings, Performance Max negative keyword lists and channel reports, any call-only ads, whether AI Max is worth a test, and your measurement setup in Google Ads Data Manager. These map directly to changes Google shipped in 2025 and 2026.

Do not react on the day. Note the change, find the affected campaigns, and wait for a full week of data before you change bids or targets. Google itself suggests bid simulators after the April 2025 change that lets ads show at the top and bottom of a page.
Then annotate the date in your reports so you can explain any shift to clients or your CFO. If you are new to the platform, start with our Google Ads guide, and read AI search marketing in 2026 for how AI Max and AI Overviews fit together.
The 2025 and 2026 Google Ads changes hand more work to Google AI, but they also returned controls advertisers asked for: PMax negatives, channel reports, brand controls in AI Max tests and channel priority. Use the controls first, then let the automation run. Indian advertisers should treat AI Overviews ads as live and AI Mode ads as a 2027 question.
Google Ads ships changes every week, but the big ones cluster around Google Marketing Live each May and the run-up to the holiday season. In 2026 Google also published a Demand Gen feature drop almost every month on the Ads & Commerce blog.
Yes. Google launched AI Max for Search as a global beta in May 2025, and its Google Marketing Live 2026 page says AI Max has been out of beta since April 2026. The AI Brief feature is in a closed beta and Hindi is not yet among its listed languages.
No separate setup is needed. Google Ads Help says text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible in the listed markets, which include India. Sensitive categories such as gambling, finance and healthcare are excluded.
Yes. Auto Apply is controlled at account level from the Recommendations page, and you can switch each type on or off at any time. Since 26 January 2026 the Add responsive search ads recommendation no longer auto-applies at all.
Google stopped the creation of new call-only ads in February 2026, and existing call-only ads stop receiving impressions in February 2027. Google wants you to move to responsive search ads with call assets.
It can. From August 2026 Google is extending Limited Ad Serving to all Google Ads, rolling out gradually to 2028. Google weighs account maturity, policy history and advertiser verification, so verify early and keep a clean record.
